Lets start with the receiver. Many will recomend the Onkyos for the most bang for the buck.

The Onkyo 705, 805 at a minimuim. Do you have a brand preference?

in 2001 i owned an onkyo receiver and polk audio all the way around. $5500 for the whole setup and it sounded amazing. i am definately a onkyo fan though to answer your question, as well as polk.

PS3. Perfect. DTS HDMA is coming to PS3 via firmware up-date soon.

I would personally stay away from any Samsung product as there have been problems with both TVs and BD players.

Look for a 120HZ Sony as they are great TVs. Make sure you purchase 1080p and not a 1080i TV.

tell you what. give me your $7000 and i'll get you a kick ass set up, but i get to keep whats leftover.

there's way to many questions to ask to help you out. what i would suggest is go to best buy, circuit city, frys, and other "high end" places: listen to the speakers & receivers, look at the tvs, sit on the couches, make sure you get all the model numbers. then go online to www.shopzilla.com and look at where you can get them online. i saved myself a ton doing this and have a set up i really enjoy for i'd say about $7,000 for both bedroom and living room (including furniture in living room)

http://www.vanns.com/shop/

Check out Vanns also. Great prices. Very fast and reliable company. No shipping charges on anything either.

What I would get:

1. Sony TV 1080p, 120hz.
2. Onkyo 805.
3. Tower Boston Accoustic Speakers X 4 for front left and right, two surrounds.
4. Boston Accoustic Center Channel.
5. Subwoofer. Min 12" with at least 200 watts.

You can get all of this in your price range. Just don't purchase anything from Best buy, etc. Way too expensive! Order from Amazon or these other web sites.

Is getting a new TV an option as well? Or are you content with the television that you have now? I would recommend a Bravia xbr5. Then you could get your Onkyo speaker system 805 and still be about 3 - 4 thousand under what your wife said you could spend.

Also, if you are looking to go through the internet to save money, GO THROUGH AMAZON.COM. Amazon is king.

i would go with an onkyo receiver, bowers and wilkins speakers and an svs sub.

are you dead set on a flat panel, i would highly recommend a front projector there is just nothing else like it and for 3000 you could get a sweet 1080p

ok here is what i would get:

b&w 683 fronts $1,500 pair
b&w ds3 bipole surrounds $700 pair
b&w 685 rear surrounds $600 pair
b&w htm62 center $425
sub svs 16-40 pci $649
receiver: onkyo 805 $800

total for sound: $4,673

and if you decide to go with a projector sony vpl-vw40 $2,999

i had the onkyo 905 on there but it was 1500 so i droped to the 805 to fit in the sub. the 805 is more than enough really

For sound, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU VISIT A SHOWROOM IN YOUR CITY AND HEAR SPEAKERS IN ACTION FOR YOURSELF.

After my sampling of at least a dozen high end speaker setups, I ended up choosing B&W (Bowers & Wilkins) like the poster that I quoted... different models though. They offer a huge sound experience while saving room and at some great prices for the quality.

PLEASE take my advice and go listen to speakers yourself. TAKE THE TIME and you may stumble onto a nice surprise. DON'T RUSH YOUR SPEAKER DECISION.
