As is true for most other connected electronics (PC's, ipods, iphones, cell phones) there must be some potential for viruses, spyware and other malicious items being installed in BD players. Have game consoles, like the PS3, been victims of this type of activity, or have they in some way been proofed? You'd hate for two things to happen, though, the first being your player getting screwed by a virus, and the second would be having others monitor what you watch. Paranoid, I know, but something to consider nonetheless.

It's virtually impossible to do so. the player is only programmed to go to specific sites, and it doesn't respond to net traffic except from connections it initiated. You can't multicast to the players, they have to phone home, and if they don't have your number, it doesn't work
Not to mention the fact that a quick memory purge would get rid of it, even if they managed to somehow write a BDJ virus and get it in the DLC |

I think it just comes down to payoff. So you infect my PS3, what are you going to do, steal my save games?
Computers are much better targets because of payoff. You script a PC virus/trojan/worm, and you get the payoff of a backdoor into a bank, or credit card numbers, or any other number of valuable things. Until PS3s (or any other item) are linked into valuable information, there won't be any worth to creating a virus for the PS3. Sure, you can create one to gain notoriety, but that's not really worth it. Plus, it's easy enough to just wipe the memory and restore. I could see them being spam-bots at most. At most, but it would just bee too tricky to do, PCs are easier. |

It is kind of like viruses on a Mac. You don't see them cause it isn't worth the time and effort. The install base for Mac is much smaller than PC, and the PC is more susceptible to attacks making it easier to get to more computers. Why hack a mac, or a PS3, when you can hack a PC and get more users and better info.
Spam maybe but highly doubtful. The worse thing that can happen is if a tester accidentally added one onto a disc (like with the recent ipod fiasco) and it spread from there. |

There will be no side effects if you don't connect the player to the internet.

Assuming it is at all possible, it would depend on how clever the red ants are. It doesn't strike me that any of them have the intelligence to go after Blu-ray in this way. They prefer to throw hissy fits on the forums and whine about their chosen format dying.
