Question PS3 Database Rebuilt? What's this?

So I just turned on my PS3 and it said something like "Database will now be rebuilt" and the only option it gave me was "x" to continue. Then it said "Database is being rebuilt. Do not turn off your system. About 4 minutes and 2 freakouts later, my PS3 started like nothing changed.

Has this happened to anyone else?

What was the point? Everything seems the same so far.

Hitting up google, seems like it happens to a bunch of people. Most people report everything went fine with odd glitches of files being re-named and organization of files being changed. A very few complain of major changes to the system and user settings, and one or two complained the PS3 didn't work anymore. The general consensus seems to be that for some reason the database was written to a bad sector or something along those lines. Glad to hear that everything is okay with the system!

Didn't it happen for everybody after one of the System Software updates? Nothing changed obviously for me afterwards.

I checked that, and as far as I can tell, nothing was renamed or rearranged. Thanks for the replies

So far, my system hasn't done that since the latest firmware upgrade. Did any of you have trouble streaming video after the last upgrade? I know Crackinhedz did, and so did I. My video streaming by my PS3 over my network has been choppy since the last firmware upgrade. It worked flawlessly prior to that. I wonder if this database rebuild had anything to do with correcting that issue.

Did any of you notice a difference in video streaming after the database correction?

Default PS Store

The new PS Store redesign is coming in a couple short weeks and will be software based instead of internet based, maybe it has to do with that?

Neither of mine have done that though and if it was for the change in the store, I'd expect it to happen to everyone (that has a PS3 connected to the internet, that is).

i got that a couple days ago, but i haven't noticed anything different except the XMB seems a bit quicker loading icons and whatnot. i think it's more likely a defrag type maintenance than it is a corrupt data recovery thing.

If the PS3 automatically defrags it's awesome.

That would be nice. I have been downloading a deleting a lot of stuff, so I wish there was a defrag option.

It would be cool if it was a defrag. I've been wishing I could do that for months!

I don't think it has to do with the firmware update though, I updated mine within 5 minutes of the release. I can't imagine why it would take so long.

I haven't noticed any difference in streaming, as I don't do it that often.

Mine just did this. One bad side effect is all of my downloaded videos list the 25th as their download date!

This just happened to my 120gb, after owning it for just under 6 months! I guess I've downloaded and deleted a lot of stuff in that time! Since it happened to the 60gb a couple months ago and everything was fine, I didn't panic. When it was done, all my picture, video, music and game files were still there...but all lumped together in albums titled "Unknown" It's gonna be a P.I.T.A. to re-sort exactly 400 pics.

Bumping an old thread because this just happened to me and I was searching to see if anyone else had posted about it. However, unlike everyone else here, I lost everything. All my game save files are gone.
