Default Denon 3808CI

My dad just got a new 1080P projector and also upgraded his receiver to the Denon 3808CI so he will be prepared when he get a Bluray when the next line with internet connectivity comes out. So for now he is still using a high end Denon DVD player. When ever we turn the upscaler on in the receiver it makes the picture not only have the bars at the top and bottom which are normal on some disc but also on the side. There are three options in the upscaler. Off which doesn't have this issue, A to H which we haven't tried, and A to H & H to H which does have the issue. He was getting frustrated and just wanted to watch a movie so we will try to other setting later. anyone know which is the correct one to use? also I believe there is another setting of full or double in another setting. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I assumed the HIGH END DENON DVD PLAYER upscale to 1080p.. if it's the case. just turn off the upscaler. The upscaler is nice for 480i source.. but for 1080i,720p, 1080p, just let it pass without being modified..

Make sure the 3808 and DVD player are both set for the correct TV aspect ratio: 16x9 (widescreen HDTV) or 4:3 (standard TV).

EDIT: Re-read your post. Make sure they are both set for 16x9 in their set-up menus.
