Default PS3 - HDMI video and SPDIF audio - possible?

Hi guys,

Has anyone got a set up working with the video going over HDMI and the audio going over Optical SPDIF?

The manual implies that if HDMI is used, it is used for both and so far it seems that this is the case

I have an urgent application and would prefer to not have to buy an HDMI receiver just to have sound.

Any pointers appreciated!

Cheers!

Yes it is possible. You just have to go to the Audio settings in the System menu. Here you will select Optical, if you were using HDMI when you set up the PS3, the audio is automatically set to go over HDMI. There is one disadvantage though for using optical. Optical can only be used with 5.1 channel sound. Also if you want uncompressesed audio I believe this is only over HDMI as well. If you want 7.1 you have to use HDMI and thus have a HDMI capable receiver. Good Luck!

Not only is this possible, its how the majority of PS3 owners are getting audio until HDMI receivers come down in price.

That was what I expected. I also expected to see the options under 'BD playback' or at least a pointer in the manual in the connections section

In any case, it is working as needed now - thanks!
