Default System keep rebooting

Just built a computer and was trying to play blu ray but after anywhere from 30 seconds to few minutes, system would reboot spontaneously. When it did play, video was very smooth. CPU utilization never got above 35%.

ASUS P5B with XP
Q6600 overclocked to 3.0
3GB Crucial PC6400
Ultra X3 power supply
Quadro FX 3450 (cyberlink advisor gives yellow grade)
old Dell 2405 (non HDCP compliant) using AnyDVD
LG GGW-H20L
PowerDVD Ultra 8

I should mention that I stressed with Prime95 and CPU/RAM is rock stable.

So what do people think is the problem? I'm guessing the old non-HDCP monitor and much less likely the GPU. I'm hoping I don't have to waste the Quadro.

Eventually I plan to use this to convert HD camcorder footage to blu-ray but I would like to watch an occasional movie. Any help would be appreciated?

Thanks in advance.

its only when playing the blu-ray? doesn't happen during games or anything else?

i'd say overheating, driver conflict maybe.

It only reboots during blu ray playback. Regular DVD plays fine. Haven't had a chance to play games yet (don't play that many games anyway). when stressed with Prime95, rock stable. Temp never gets above 55 even at 100% CPU utilization.

Even though it appears to be stable running prime95, have you tried using stock settings?

Also, have you checked the event log to see if it recorded any errors?

I'm sort of new at this. I will try at stock speed. How do I check log for errors?

It's the Quadro - its not optimized for BD playback (its more of a CAD system type card). Go with a new 9 or 8 series card and you will be fine!

I was hoping that wasn't the case prerich but you may be right. If I g.et an 8800, as far as video encoding, what kind of difference are there b/w the Quadro and 8800 512MB

Appreciate everyone's input.

Novicejr, if

you want to check the system, then go to my computer, right-click it. Select manage and then look at the event viewer. Click the + sign under system and check application. It will tell you what errors have occurred in the system. For, more info click properties on a error. If the system is rebooting, could be a bad video driver or video card.

It should be under the administrative tools. Depending on how you have things setup, Administrative tools may be on the top level Start Menu or under the All Programs menu. It should be listed under the control panel also. Look for Event Viewer.

While the Quadros aren't as common for general/personal use, they can usually run the same things as the GeForce line of cards. For a while, there was even a soft-mod that was supposed to turn GeForce cards into Quadros, although, there are still some hardware differences. It's hard to convince the conspiracy minded individuals of that though.

Anyway, since you're able to get it partially working, maybe it's just a driver issue. If it is just a driver issue, you might be able to try the GeForce drivers. I know it works going in the other direction (i.e. using Quadro drivers with GeForce cards) so maybe it goes both ways. You might have to get GeForce drivers with a modified INF file though. Actually, just checked the GeForce INF file and it looks like the Quadros are listed. If you do end up needing a modified INF file, try this site: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

If you haven't tried the 169.47 Quadro drivers, you might want to try that before you do anything else. They were released on April 3rd.

Thanks for the suggestion Owa. Tried the new 169.47 quadro drivers and now can play for longer period of time before computer reboots itself. Didn't have much time last night. Will try some more tonight but it does sound like a driver issue.

If you are doing video encoding - the 8800gt should do fine (are you doing non-linear editing with premire or some other suite? it shouldn't be a problem).

Thanks for reply prerich. Eventually, that is my goal, doing non-linear editing. Haven't decided on software yet but leaning toward one of the adobe suite (I know a college student and they can buy it with a significant student discount).

To check your logs Windows Key + r (or Start then Run) then type eventvwr and hit return. Check in the system logs for the red x errors and look up the event id using google.

As prerich said it's the Quadro not handling blu-ray. As for a replacement card depends what you want to do with it - just blu-ray, games/blu-ray, blu-ray/serious stuff. If it's just blu-ray then ATI's latest 3000 series are good but if you want games in the mix the latest Nvidia 9000 series could be more suitable. If your after serious stuff search out the app which is the industry standard then see what they recommend. Some applications work better with specific hardware. At work we have an ATI system for video editing using Premier Pro if that's any help ?!

Your choice (and cash)

tried owa's suggestion. Using 174.82 with modded INF from laptopvideo2go and was able to watch I,Robot all the way through but video slightly choppy. Guess I'll have decide whether to keep Quadro with better openGL for video editing or buy new card for better blu-ray watching. Thanks for everyone's help.

Cool, looks like you're getting close so hopefully a new driver at some point will smooth things out.

You could try 174.74 too. I seem to only hear good things about this one and it's my driver of choice. You shouldn't even need a modded inf.

I didn't see much difference between 174.74 vs 174.82
Had to use modded INF with either because of my Quadro card.
