Default Dell Desktop PC with Blu Ray Drive

I am looking to buy a new PC... since I buy one only every few years, I try and get the most advanced possibe to stay ahead.

So I am waiting for Windows Vista, coming this month, and I also want a Bu Ray Drive built in... (I know it will probably be obsolete from a Speed and Dual HD/Blu Ray drive perspective within a year, but I want to at least have what is available now in there).

I see Dell has a Laptop computer which has Blu Ray drive...

Does anyone know when a PC with BluRay from Dell can be expected? If not exactly... wiill it be a few weeks, months days etc??

Also, I assume these drives read AND write as well.. am I right?

Thanks for the help.

Mike

That should be stated on their website. If there's no option to get the BD drive shipped with the computer, you can always order one from another shop. It's very easy to put one in there yourself.

Remember to include an HDCP video card with HDCP display in your Blu-ray PC planning plans.

Wait until after CES look for major announcements from HP, Dell and Sony (Vaio) on the BD side. Sony are in the process of updating their desktop range to C2D and BD as standard all with 7/8 series Nvidia GPUs. Dell will shortly be doing the same, HP will offer BD as an option priced at $99 like they do for HD DVD.

As of now, I think you can get a VAIO PC with a BD drive built in.

Again, jsut wait till a little after Vista and CES, so you can get better models/technology.

Thanks for the help....

I do not want to put my own in there.. I rather it come with the device to avoid any hassles or other needs for it to operate well.

I will wait for CES this week to see if there are any announcements about Blu Ray availability.

On another note, the PC Blu Ray devices I assume DO record (otherwise they wouldn't be much good)

Right?

Yeh all of the BD devices in PCs record BDs, but you should check whether they are Dual Layer complaint before buying.

Thanks for the help.

I wish SOMEONE at CES, preferably DELL will announce at least a Blu-Ray OPTION for their desktop machines (why does Dell just have it available for Laptop).

Nothing about Blu Ray drive available with any XPS or top of the line 710 XPS at all.... I am not buying until these start shipping with VISTA anyway which should be in the next 2 weeks I would assume....

But I hope they get the Blu Ray on the site....

Dell were a little slow updating their website after the announcement of the laptop Blu ray drive, so hopefully likewise with the PC's they will be same and up on net in a few days.

11 Days later....

Now VISTA is available from Dell which is great....

But STILL no sign of Blu Ray availability in the Desktop Machines, even the higher end SPS series... Sony has it!

I am hoping Dell puts this availability up on the web soon.

Yeah, it's disappointing. I want to get upgraded to Vista this year but I refuse to actually upgrade my current machine since I prefer it for legacy reasons. I want to get a new box sometime in the next few months but I also want it to have a BD drive in it.

Well, I do not know what is taking Dell. People say they heard at CES that they would include Blu Ray but no such luck yet at all. FUnny thing is they SELL a Blu Ray Drive Seperately on their site. I just want it all included int he package and not spent a huge amount just for the drive....

I wonder how long it will take? No wonder these technologies aren't catching on faster.. between getting a drive for the PC asnd a recordable table top unit, it is impossivle.

I suspect this is a Vista thing. Dell has removed Blu-ray from their laptops at the sametime they released Vista. I called Dell to find out when the Blu-ray drives would be available again, Kelvin (I'm certain not his real name) said Dell no longer supported Blu-ray. I'm certain the guy hasn't got a clue what he was talking about, by other things he said, and his total lack of comprehension but he was the Dell represntative.

Refer to other posts here, but only Vista 64bit will support HD. HD-DVD is supposed to be supported natively whilst Blu-ray will require third party support.
