Default LG's Dual Format high-def player seems legit

I just visited Bestbuy.com's blu-ray page and was shocked to see that they are displaying the new LG blu-ray/hd dvd player (m/n BH100) as coming soon. Everyone check it out!!!

Nice find. Now, the bad news. It's listed at $1200. Could be a deal killer.

That certainly doesn't play along very well with the HD-DVD propoganda of "We're the cheapest so we're the best."

It will flop hard at that price. A2 can be had for 350, PS3 for 500. 850, and you can play games on the PS3 and upconvert on the A2. I dont see anyone other then newcomers wanting it, and even then, why not buy the A2/PS3 combo instead.

I can see it already. This thing is going to have so many glitches it's not even funny. 2x formats = 2x the problems.

I would never buy any L(ucky)G(oldstar) electronics, that brand should have died years ago with their below-par quality. If they were still called Lucky Goldstar people would never get that stuff.

On the BD/HD DVD side, you can get two standalones (Samsung + HD-A2) for less money than this one standalone, that makes no sense to me.

Unless it decodes advanced audio and passes them as PCM, which by the way is unlikely as they would have to pay extra license fees for DD-TruHD and DTS-HDMA, further decreasing their margin.

I think I'd go this route in a minute rather than pay $1200 for an LG combo. That thing has got to have more bugs than a Latin American jungle.

What if they want a 1 wire to receiver solution? Wont work. Not everyone is into the analog out.

Even so the player will decode the signal and pass the decoded PCM track to your receiver through any HDMI version.

I thought HDi/iHD is mandatory spec for HD-DVD? If it is not included, why did the DVD Forum authorized the release of their format on this player?

If this is true, LG is so gonna get screwed by the HD-DVD supporters.

Y'know, I just don't understand why LG didn't just go ahead and come out with a BD player like they should have in the first place?

What a waste of time, resource, and material.

I read that article earlier, it mentions that there are two BV diodes in there, one for BD and HD DVD the other for normal DVD, I can't help but to think that they have made a mistake and that one diode reads BD and DVD, the other reads HD DVD alone. Making a BV diode to read BD/HD would be a real engineering feat as it would need to be able to focus at 0.1mm for BD, and 0.6mm for HD DVD, atm they are having trouble with just getting them to focus at 0.1mm alone. Weird.

This statement from that site sort of says it all:

Quote:
If you thought LG’s new ‘Super Multi Blue’ combo next-gen disc player was the answer to format war, think again. This first generation unit is so expensive and crippled that you could buy a Blu-ray player and an HD DVD player and still have change. Hopeless!
If LG had concentrated on a Blu-ray player alone, priced at $499, they'd have burned up the track with sales. Now, they've got a warehouse full of expensive doorstops.

It's funny, but the more this sinks in, the more I'm beginning to think that this was actually a strategic move by the BDA camp. Sort of a wolf-in-sheep's clothing.

-LG, a member of the BDA, makes a dual format player.

-The BDA says it was "inevitable" and holds no grudge against LG for doing it.

-The combo player is a fully functional BD player, but severly handicaps HD-DVD features.

When an unwary consumer, takes their first plunge into High-Def pre-recorded media and gets their first look at HD-DVD and Blu-Ray on this machine, Blu-Ray is going to win hands-down everytime. People are going to ask "Why would I go with HD-DVD when Blu-Ray is so much better?" i.e. better menus, better features, etc.

If I were Toshiba, I'd be very concerned with this combo player. It's not going to paint HD-DVD in a very good light at all. By default, Blu-Ray will always win on this player (based on what we know about it today).

I think this speaks volumes about who LG thinks is going to win this format war. If they truly belived HD-DVD were the superior format, this would have been the other way around, i.e. fully functioning HD-DVD player with Blu-Ray tacked on.

Just a thought.
