I am Legend - endings (SPOILERS)

I just watched the movie for the first time last night. I must say, this was a blind buy and probably the very best blind buy I have made, needless to say the movie kept me on the edge of my seat and always wanting more.
If you have not seen the movie, please don't read below

We watched the Alternate version first, just by circumstance. I didn't like the way movie ended or appeared to end.

[Show spoiler] I know they were driving to the compound in Vermont, but I got the feeling as I did in the first LOTR movies. Now, I knew that was a trilogy, but to end I Am Legend with a trip in a car really pissed me off, they could have showed them make it to the compound or whatever...

I really miss good endings...like Shawshank Redemption, now that was a great ending.

So, after being a bit upset and no solid conclusion, I started the theatrical version, fast forward to the end. This had more of the conclusion I expect from a movie.

[Show spoiler] Yes, he did die, but she made it to Vermont and you assume they cured them in the end with all his hard work.

I guess I dug the theatrical ending better,

[Show spoiler] however, if I were him, I would have chucked the grenade and then dove in that little lock box with the girl and child. But, if I knew there would be a series of 3 movies, I would have preferred the alternate ending.

Which ending did you guys prefer? why?

I felt the alternate ending may more sense considering the earlier scene with the...

[Show spoiler]alpha male yelling in the sun - I took from it that he was yelling because Will's character had taken his mate

...was well shot and Will's acting was flawless.

I liked the theatrical ending, the alternate was a bit too contrived. On the other hand there was an other thread on this subject, so I won't bother to reiterate what I did not like about the alternate.

I wonder how much was left on the cutting room floor. It felt like there should have been more of his studying the humane tendencies of the vamps that were emerging.
