I have a 720p Sharp Aquos LC-32D43U and the Blu-Ray playback doesn't seem to look as good at 1080i as on my 720p Bravia downstairs. Is there a way to force the PS3 to do BR playback at 720p, so I can see if perhaps that improves the picture quality a bit? Everything else can stay at 1080i, I just want the BR playback at 720p.
Also, anyone else noticed 720p being better than 1080i, for BR playback, on the PS3? Thank You! ![]() |

You'll have to untick 1080i if you want to watch Blu-ray videos at 720p.
Sounds like the Bravia's doing a better job of deinterlacing and downscaling 1080i to 768p. I would still check that you don't get a better picture on the Bravia with 720p PS3 output too, not just on Blu-ray movies but games too. |

720 should theoretically look better as its the native resolution of your TV. There are no modern 1080i displays. If you output at 1080i the TV has to deinterlace and scale the image to display at 720p anyways. This isn't to say that 1080i looks poor, but if you look there will be jagged edges and artifacting in most instances.

Yeah, 1080i looks clearer on my Samsung TV. Perhaps it's just the difference in TV's.

On a 720p display, it very much depends on how good the de-interlacer is in your TV.
"Most" 720p HDTVs are actually 1365x768, which means regardless of whether you're getting a 720p signal or a 1080i signal, there is scaling going on. 720p -> 768p = upscale. 1080i -> 768p = deinterlace and downscale. That's why the results depend on the deinterlacer in your display. In a perfect world, 1080p(source) converted to 1080i, deinterlaced properly and downscaled to 768p is going to look slightly better than 1080p source downscaled to 720p and then upscaled to 768p. The only time you'll get a true 1:1 pixel map against a 720p signal is with an LCD computer monitor that is 1280x720. |
