Are game systems bad for watching movies?

I have been using my ps3 as a blu ray player since I got it in december of 2006. It is actually my main use for it. But I just had comcast over to my house to fix my internet connection, and I began talking to the guys after they were done about blu-ray (they said they were fans too). They said that they were looking into getting blu ray players themselves, but did not want to get the ps3, as game systems are not designed to watch movies as well as actual players. They said something about the lasers in the game systems having shorter life spans when used watching movies. I was just wondering if this is true, as I love my ps3 for watching movies, especially now that dts-hd master audio has been added and I have always heard that it is one of the best if not the best blu ray players. Do I need to be concerned about the life span of my ps3 if I watch blu rays on it. I hope that they were wrong. Someone please let me know if you have heard of this too. Thank you.

one question: why are you listening to comcast? i have comcast myself and i dont believe anything they say! they barely know how to install cable!

You should invite that guy back over just to smack him in the face...some people can argue that the PS3 is more of a dynamic blu-ray player than gaming system. It is arguably the best blu-ray player on the market.

I've never heard of this. But logic tells me that a system being used equally as a player as it is a game system means it's getting TWICE as much use, hence increasing wear-and-tear over a shorter period of time. In that regard I'm willing to believe it might have a shorter life-span, but that's not necessarily a guarantee.

But for the record, the PS3 is a VERY capable blu-ray player, but it's also nice that it can also play games.

I don't think I'd take the word of the $10/hr cable guy as gospel. The majority of people here use PS3's without any problems. I would even wager that Sony uses most of the same components in its standalones that they use in the PS3.

Plus, PS3 games are on Blu-ray, so . . . the PS3 doesn't know what function its serving, so the laser's not going to discriminate.

this sterotype got created last gen with the sh1t lasers in the PS2. A DVD players was a lot more reliable than the crap, misaligned, short life span, PoS PS2 DVD lasers. However, Sony made damn sure they didn't make the same mistake twice and the PS3 is the BEST Blu-ray player on the market.

The Comcast guy is not just making up random sh1t, some consoles do suck to watch movies on, but PS3 is not one of them.

The only argument that can be made is that in the past the PS2 would not spin as fast when playing games and processed from the disk on a need bases. For example when you hit the disk tray open and could still play some parts of the game until it needed to load again. Where as a DVD required constant rotation and a higher speed because the imformation is pulled real time and the components within the PS2 where made for gaming (i.e. cheaper). With the PS3 the components are built to that of an actual stand alone player. The speeds are comprable for games and movies...you should still punch him in the head. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

While it's true that watching a movie requires the DVD/BD drive to stay in constant motion, thus putting more wear on it than playing games does, the PS3 is definitely a better and tougher Blu-ray player than the PS2 was a DVD player.

This may be true once new standalones are released, but as of right now, the PS3 is the best, most versatile player on the market. The Comcast guys do not know what the hell they are talking about.

As for the longevity of the laser diodes, there isn't a single speck of truth in what they said. These lasers are built to last for a LONG time; the PS3 is a game system afterall and gamers spend countless hours playing. Watching movies that are generally 1:30 or 2:00 means squat for lasers meant to play games that last for 40-100 hours each.

I had my PS2 turned on playing games for much longer than anyone will ever spend watching movies in their lifetime. On top of that I had no DVD player other than the PS2. Finally the PS2's laser is known to be a faulty piece of crap that is second only to the Xbox360 in rate of failure and yet I still have my PS2 in perfect working condition 7 years after I bought it.

In summary, let me say that those Comcast guys may be Blu-Ray fans, but they are moronic Blu-Ray fans.

PS3 laser is fine for me...I've had mine since Nov 2006 and use it mostly for playing movies.

I wish it had a sleep timer.

To the OP:

While that may have been true for the PS2, the same certainly does not hold for the PS3. The PS2 was designed primarily for playing games, and had shoddy support at best for DVDs, which was compounded by infinite problems with the lasers in those machines. The PS3 was designed as a multimedia console, not a game console, and as such, is a much more robust machine for playing movies.

The PS3 led the flagship to secure Blu-ray as the dominant MOVIE format. Not only is it the least expensive, but also the most fully functional (the only exception here is with respect to output ports), and also boasts the fastest loading time of any player out there by a long shot.

Sounds like BS to me. The laser in the PS3 is very likely to be exactly the same as the laser used in every other Blu-ray player.

If you want to spend (much) more cash, you can get a player with better PQ and AQ than the PS3, but there's no need to be concerned about its longevity.

Sony was well aware that the PS3 would more the likley be a game system as well as a Blu ray movie player. I think it was built well to handle those 2 tasks for a long while.

They said the EXACT same thing about the PS2. They said that if you play DVD movies on your PS2, it will wear out the laser faster. Well I still have an original (got mine the day it came out) PS2 and it still plays movies and games perfectly!

Ignore them, it is just more FUD.

I think Sony engineers took this into consideration. It wasn't exactly a cheap machine to build.
