Default Why was HD-DUD dubbed the "red" format?

I can understand why Blu-ray is dubbed "blu" and it makes sense to use blue keep case, but why was HD-DUD dubbed "red"? It uses the same blue-violet laser as Blu-ray. Does anybody know?

I apologize if this was discussed before; I did a search and didn't find any relevant info.

Thanks.

The red cases? That's what I always though, but maybe I was ignorant on the subject...

Never gave it much thought...

I think the red case was the only reason. It also played into its rivalry with Blu-ray by going with an opposing color.

Yes, I suppose that is the case - resulting in us calling them ants. Would've been better for us if they picked purple, though, the jokes practically write themselves.

afaik, it has to do with the cases.

of course, violet / purple is a mix of red and blue. since blue was taken....

They were ugly cases... the Blu color is so much more pleasing to the eye.

The cases. And of course the red/blue state thing in the US made it a natural for opponent designators.

It may have been the cases as some have said, but the cases may have gotten their color from the fact that HD DVD was originally going to use a modified version of the red laser used in DVDs. They later switched to use a blue laser like Blu-ray, but they don't focus it as tightly, hence the lower capacity.

I don't agree.

I personally liked the red color better then the blue color. To me the blue cases look like a kids toy but oh well... Nothing we can do about it. Blue cases make perfect sense considering the name Blu-ray.

I agree...

It's just too bad many members of this site had little to no interest in high definition video before they realized Blu-ray just became their game consoles mascot. The fanboyism is very childish.

The only feature HD DVD slacked on was the use of lossless audio. Storage space had nothing to do with it. One could thank Universal and Paramount for this... Let's just hope they don't this all over again when they go Blu!

I have many EARLY Blu-rays and many look like crap but things are MUCH better nowadays.

HD DVD was far more consistent in terms of PQ back in the early days but now that Blu-ray has grown I've noticed only a handful of my HD DVD's can hang with the best of my Blu-rays. High bit video does help.

HD DVD was a capable format.. far better then D-VHS aka D-Theater but at the end of the day, Blu-ray is better mainly due to stretch resistance, storage space and all the recent profile advancements.

Not trying to start a fire. I'm a fan of Blu-ray and enjoy all things HD.. but I'm a realist.. That is all.

I think it was about communism, and the analogy is actually quite good. Like others, I was conned by the low prices into buying into it, not realising it was actually all a scheme to kill Blu-Ray and High Def media to allow Microsoft to be kings of the ugly VOD. Toshiba never intended the format to suceed long term I think, they all knew it was going down, but they wanted to bring BR down with them.
Michael Bay was right all along...

HD DVD was backed by a certain "Mircosoft" company, who also brought us the concept of RedRingOfDeath. I guess that might have inspired the color association as well. :P

I have both Formats...... Blu-Ray is better, but some Blu-Rays are still being released with inferior audio/video (given the capabilities)

I am just a fan of movies, and I like them to look and sound as good as possible. I think the people who fueled the "war" (I got my first Blu Ray Player, and HD DVD Player one day apart....) need to grow up, and I agree, most of the "Loudest" fans of either respective format were Video-Gamers, most being just young punks, so it's easy to see why it turned into an immature name calling war, and facts became second-hand.

They should have stuck with a black case because the format was (HD)DED from the start.
