Default UnCommon courtesy

I had a very funny thing happen to me today. This incident pushed me to finally communicate what I'd been observing for a very long time: the disappearance of common courtesy. For example:

This morning, I was walking into my office building for work. As I opened the door (I was carrying my laptop in a shoulder bag, my morning newspaper, my lunch bag, and my coffee), I glanced behind me to see a gentlemen about 10 steps behind me. As such, I held the door open for him. As he passed me, he offered no "thank you", no smile, no indication that my gesture of common courtesy was welcome. The gentleman just continued to the guard desk.... Am I the only person who finds this rude? This happens weekly, by the way.

Also, when did "turn signals" start becoming obsolete? I was required to use it when changing lanes during my driver's test 14 years ago.

The left lane, unless I'm mistaken, is a "passing lane," correct? It's not a "get in this lane to be passed" lane.

Perhaps I'm just a bit uptight, but I've just seen common courtesy really fly by the wayside. It's now more common to be rude to people, or completely ignore their existence as humans! It's as if being courteous is the exception.... so annoying. [/end rant]

From my experience, I'd venture to guess that the male that walked through your open door was of some asian descent.

In So Cal, forget common courtesy from most of that race.

*This is not a racist post, this is factual, actual life observations.

Plus a ton -- what really gets me pissed is when I have my kids hold the door open for someone, and THEY'RE completely ignored. Women don't thank me anymore, either. I usually yell out "You're Welcome" after they've gone a few steps...

*I live in So. Cal, and this has NOTHING to do with Asians, it's an epidemic...*

I'm feelin' you. I'm usually overly courteous in these types of situations, because I actually feel embarassed if I'm not. I always thank waiters for refilling my drink, I thank people for holding the door, I hold doors, etc. But, like you said, most people just ignore you anymore.

Driving . . . ugh, don't get me started. I like the Autobahn style where if you're coming up on somebody and flash your lights, they have to get over or else they can be cited. Nothing irks me more than when there's someone driving under the speed limit in the passing lane. I have an hour and fifteen minute commute each way, and when I get on the road I'm in no mood for f**king around. In these situations I'm no longer courteous, as I'll do my best to make you think I'm going to take your front bumper off when I pass you.

You are correct, OP. As I always says, the masses are asses! The good people sometimes seem few and far between.

i also hate it when you hold the door and they jsut keep on walking. i always used turn signals but not everbody does anymore. even the cops..lol. i also can't stand when cars don't yield to pedestrians. it's annoying.. and vice versa, when pedestrians throw themselves to cross the street when it's clearly red for them.. either way, if i hit the pedestrian, i end up lossing the case even if i had the green light..

I understand what you’re saying. It feels like common courtesy has been thrown in the gutter. I think it’s more of a problem now than in the past because where living in age where most people have the mentality of “I Want IT NOW!!!” Most people need to learn a little Patience.

I’m going to take quote the Boy Scout Motto here and I think everyone should at the very least “Do a Good Turn Daily!”

Driving....I'm not even going to get started on that topic.

Annoying is a understatement actually I'm glad to not be the only one who is having these issues, I have to wonder why folks are SO UNHAPPY they act the way they do, and IMHO it's not the fracking price of fuel and food! YMMV.

oh i guess alot of us suffer from these problems.

i hate when women are driving while (brushing hair, doing make up, talking on cell) or a combo of all 3 sometimes. get off the road dammit

i had a asian girl (nothing against asians at all) cut out in front of me at the last possible second, practically drove me off the road. so i beeped the horn for atleast 10 seconds and what did she do gave me the finger for about 1 minute out the window to me as she drove away talk about being super pissed. so i did what any normal person would do, i followed her for a while to scare her a bit. but then i backed off and thought i could get in trouble for this i guess.

anyways people suck plain and simple!! and they all need a

no wonder we have road rage, its idiots like this that cause it

where's my taser

Next time it happens, "slip" and spill your coffee down his back.

Then apologize.

I feel like I'm one of the only decent humans around anymore, because whenever I'm helped by someone in a store, or taken care of by my server at my restaurant, I'm rarely get a "your welcome", or "thank you" when I do a favor for someone else.

I agree that driving has also become this way also. The highway is like a damn rat race, everyone has to get where they want to be RIGHT NOW. I just the speed limit, and I don't care if you are pissed because I do so (I choose to obey the law, not to mention it's more efficient). And don't get me started on women on the phone while driving, that is my biggest pet peeve by far.

And I also think I'm one of the only guys that opens the car door for his GF.

What's that quote from No Country For Old Men, "It starts when you begin to overlook bad manners. Anytime you quit hearing "sir" and "ma'am", the end is pretty much in sight."

OP you are definatly correct. My mother taught me some decency. I've always opened up doors for people, I've always said please and thank you. Now thse things are fading away. So much else is dying out too. I wish we could bring back the politeness of the good old days.

There are other things that annoy me too, like with my roommates. I get up in the morning and find that they've forgotten to shut the light out before they went to bed. Sure we aren't getting an electricity bill from the college, but it's just something that I always grew up with. Then there's the dishes as well, if it weren't for me they'd never get done. Also what about habitual lateness. At my summer job, I was always the first one at the workplace. I even beat my bosses who were younger than I. All the other workers would show up a minute or two before we were supposed to start working. What kind of stuff is that?
