Sony/MGM could bring more attention to the Blu-ray format by doing the following as an experiment. For hit movies like CASINO ROYALE and other movies they could have a Blu-ray street date 30 days before the DVD street date. This would really get peoples attention if they were in Best Buy and they saw a movie they wanted and it was only on Blu-ray and if they wanted it on DVD they had to wait 30 days for the DVD version of the movie to be released. This would move more people to buy a Blu-ray player. If Sony delayed the DVD release of a few select titles 30 days after the Blu-ray release this would help grow Blu-Ray into mainstream.
The one possible problem of having a few select titles released on Blu-ray 30 days before DVD is the fact that people that are in the business of pirating DVD’s would take the 480I analog signal coming out of a Blu-ray player and remove the analog macrovision copyprotection and sale pirated DVD’s on the street corner before the movie is released on DVD. To get a around this problem I wonder if Sony could make some titles that only outputted HDMI HDCP and disabled all analog outputs completely. You would need a big sticker on the cover of the movie saying this early released Blu-ray movie will only play if your TV has a digital connection. Doing this would eliminate analog piracy completely from Blu-ray. |
