Default NFL Power Ranking. How close will EA's Madden 2009 Be?

Hey guys (& gals)!

As all us Madden fans & former Madden fans know, the Madden developers over at EA couldn't be be more off base when creating the team rankings for each new instalment of Madden. So far off base infact, it seems they are playing baseball on Mars.

ESPN released their mock NFL rankings for the 2008-2009 season today. I think they are somewhat close.

Here is the list:
Projected Ranking / (Last Year's Ranking) / Team / 2007 Record

1 (1) Patriots 16-0-0
2 (2) Colts 13-3-0
3 (6) Chargers 11-5-0
4 (3) Cowboys 13-3-0
5 (4) Jaguars 11-5-0
6 (9) Giants 10-6-0
7 (8) Steelers 10-6-0
8 (7) Seahawks 10-6-0
9 (13) Browns 10-6-0
10 (5) Packers 13-3-0
11 (18) Saints 7-9-0
12 (15) Vikings 8-8-0
13 (14) Eagles 8-8-0
14 (10) Redskins 9-7-0
15 (12) Buccaneers 9-7-0
16 (11) Titans 10-6-0
17 (17) Cardinals 8-8-0
18 (23) Panthers 7-9-0
19 (19) Bills 7-9-0
20 (16) Texans 8-8-0
21 (30) Jets 4-12-0
22 (25) Ravens 5-11-0
23 (21) Broncos 7-9-0
24 (20) Bears 7-9-0
25 (22) Bengals 7-9-0
26 (27) Raiders 4-12-0
27 (26) 49ers 5-11-0
28 (29) Rams 3-13-0
29 (24) Lions 7-9-0
30 (28) Chiefs 4-12-0
31 (32) Dolphins 1-15-0
32 (31) Falcons 4-12-0

My Questions are:

1. Will the Patriots still be good now that they are not stealing their opponent's play signals?

2. How much better will the Dolphins be now that they have re-tooled the team. 20 new players on Defense & Offense.

3. The Raiders did not address one of their many needs in the 2008 Draft. Will they win more than 4 games? Does Al Davis want to play a Running back at each position?

4. The JETS head coach, Eric Mangini went from "ManGenius" to "ManMoron" in one year? Will he last another losing season?

5. Was Matt Ryan the right pick for the Atlanta Falcons? Was QB Joe Flacco (Ravens) the best QB in the 2008 Draft? Should they have taken LSU, DT Glen Dorsey?

6. How much of an Impact will Favre's retirement have on the Packers?

7. Was WR Mario Manningham the Steal of the Draft for the Superbowl Champs?

8. Was Eli lucky not to get picked as Madden cover boy? Will Favre get hit by a tractor and the Madden Curse?

9. What year will the Detroit Lions hire someone that knows how to Draft players?

10. Will the Browns continue their climb to the top of the division?

11. Chad Johnson, Terrell Owens, Pacman Jones... When will Teams learn that you can't win a Championship with a big-mouth, trouble-maker on the team? (Example: Tiki, Shockey)

12. Statistically speaking, Vince Young was the worst starting QB in NFL history over the 2007 season. Can the Titans get to the Playoffs a second year in a row if Vince continues his sub par play?

13. Will Madden Football developers ever get the player & Team ratings correct? That's an easy one. The answer is... ???

Kind of disrespectful to the champs. Cant even let them be #1 in the NFC?

That's because the 'champs' got on a winning streak to ride into the play-offs...even New Yorkers can't expect Manning Jr to play that well for a whole year...

I'm fine with Madden as long as Romo plays like an All-Pro right up to December...at which point a shot of Jessica Simpson is shown on the sidelines and he imediatly tanks it...

1. Will the Patriots still be good now that they are not stealing their opponent's play signals?

We'll see. Depending on how they do over the next year or so will show everyone how much the benefited from cheating.

2. How much better will the Dolphins be now that they have re-tooled the team. 20 new players on Defense & Offense.

Much better.

3. The Raiders did not address one of their many needs in the 2008 Draft. Will they win more than 4 games? Does Al Davis want to play a Running back at each position?

The Raiders ruined their entire draft with that stupid pick.

4. The JETS head coach, Eric Mangini went from "ManGenius" to "ManMoron" in one year? Will he last another losing season?

LOL. The JETS might not end with a better record then miami this year. they suck. mangini is finished.

5. Was Matt Ryan the right pick for the Atlanta Falcons? Was QB Joe Flacco (Ravens) the best QB in the 2008 Draft? Should they have taken LSU, DT Glen Dorsey?

another mistake. should have taken the lineman.

6. How much of an Impact will Favre's retirement have on the Packers?

GB will suck without Favre.

7. Was WR Mario Manningham the Steal of the Draft for the Superbowl Champs?

I just read that he is mindblowing in mini camp. Giants got the best wr in the draft.

8. Was Eli lucky not to get picked as Madden cover boy? Will Favre get hit by a tractor and the Madden Curse?

LOL. Favre is a dead man.

9. What year will the Detroit Lions hire someone that knows how to Draft players?

3010

10. Will the Browns continue their climb to the top of the division?

Ravens, Browns battle for #1 spot. Bengals in the basement.

11. Chad Johnson, Terrell Owens, Pacman Jones... When will Teams learn that you can't win a Championship with a big-mouth, trouble-maker on the team? (Example: Tiki, Shockey)

Get rid of him. There is no "i" in TEAM.

12. Statistically speaking, Vince Young was the worst starting QB in NFL history over the 2007 season. Can the Titans get to the Playoffs a second year in a row if Vince continues his sub par play?

Vince Young is garbage. Titan's defense is great. they might not be able to keep up that level of play 2 years in a row. history tells us, most teams can't do it.

13. Will Madden Football developers ever get the player & Team ratings correct? That's an easy one. The answer is... ???

NO Way in hell. The madden dev team doesn't even watch football.

Romo ends every season with a turnover. The cowboys were playing with a major chip on their shoulders because Parcells dumped them. Now it's back to reality. They need a new coach and a new QB.

8. Yes! Eli is not cover-boy material anyway!

11. Shockey is still a New York Giant, and won a Superbowl

I'm sorry. I do believe the Patriots didn't steal signals last year and they did go undefeated during the regular season. Yeah, I'd say they did fine.

Also, you do know whats on the tapes right? They show the offensive/defensive coordinator. They then show the developing play from the end zone and an overhead angle. It was TO CATALOGE WHAT COACHES/COORDINATORS TENDENCIES WERE IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS FOR FUTURE USE. Yes, it was cheating, but it gave them no advantage in game whatsoever. And anyone who thinks that it did, just hates the Patriots with such blind fury and won't listen to common sense.

Find me someone who can edit a tape that seamlessly in 15 minutes, and decipher what the signals mean during halftime and I'll shake their hand.

Other team's signals are good for 1 - 2 years. The game evolves so fast that they can only be used for a short time. If you think the PATS didn't benefit from the cheating, you have no clue about football. If stealing signals didn't affect the outcome of the game it wouldn't be AGAINST THE RULES.

well put. we'll see how the 6th round pick, tom brady, does over the next 3 years.

not to mention, Bill Belechick went from the worst coach in the NFL history to being a master. HA HA HA

nice coincidence.

1. I answered this in another post, they didn't cheat last season.

2. Not much, they still don't have a QB and their best defensive players are getting old

3. They will win 6. McFadden's pure talent will help, and they still have a great defense especially at the corner positions in Asamough (sp?) and Hall

4. They won't be as bad as last year, so I'll say yes, he'll stick around.

5. No he wasn't the best pick, but I can see why they drafted him. They want to get past Vick as quickly as possible. Dorsey would have been the best fit IMO.

6. Tons. But out of but between Rogers and Brohm one of them will keep them in the playoff hunt in a not so great division.

7. No. He wasn't. I always thought Manningham was an overrated player and everyone at Michigan benefited from Mike Hart (I'm looking at you Chad Henne).

8. Eli will curse himself.

9. 2022. I just have a feeling the Lions will win 9 games this year and Millen will keep his job.

10. The Steelers have a ridiculously tough schedule so it's possible.

11. The Cowboys seemed to do fine with Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders has won multiple rings. Pacman was stuck in Tennessee and Chad in Cinncinnati. Not the best of places.

12. No, he needs to channel his Texas days.

13. God no, I'm not buying this game and the ratings are one of the many reasons.

Then how did they lose games the past couple years? Shouldn't they go undefeated every year? Or did they tank a couple games so no one would catch on?

If the PATS keep up the "Dynasty" play over the next couple of years, then the cheating didn't help. I guess we'll see because no one really knows.

Oh wait... they're in the worst division in football. that helped the 16-0. No tapes in this past Superbowl. What do you know, they lost.

Everyone makes the playoffs in the NHL.

I just hate their owner. I'm not paying ridiculous ticket prices to go see a mediocre at best product. And if goaltender prospect Tuukka Rask isn't the starting goaltender from day one next year after what he did this past season in Providence, I may just give up on them altogether.
