They have announced that there are actually two versions in development for the PS3 and I would bet the house that one comes out in 07. Zipper was one of the first developers to get SDK's a little under 2 years ago. SOCOM is Sonys flagship online game and you will not see a Halo release or another Christmas pass without it, trust me.

Default Socom: Confrontation

In one word: Dissappointed. As a long Socom franchise player I got to say that video and description is less than enticing.

One the video, gameplay looks same, the level is crossroads from Socom2, so not only have I played that same game for the past 5 years, I have also already played that level.

Graphics are very week, no where near "next" gen, I would say even resistance blows this away.

It looks like socom2 just enhanced in HD, which is nice, but not next gen.

Plus it is download and online only, and it was stated it has only been working on for past 4 months and coming out this year, meaning less than 1 year development for limited online only market, which I can equate to really half-assed.

New developer, so what the hell has Zipper been working on the past couple years? Combined assault was a map pack for socom 3.... Have not had a true sequel since Socom 3..

Looks like Sony is taking an established franchise with dedicated gamer following and shitting all over it. 5 maps online? at least one I have already played? WTF is that? not next gen.

I have a feeling SCEA are working on two SOCOM games and this is the tide-over project to keep people going until the more ambitious Zipper project is ready.

The video I saw looked a lot better than the screens, but not PS3 quality you're right.

More specifically, I think the environments still look too boxy and the textures aren't detailed enough to draw your attention from that. The character models look great though.

whatever ive played since s1 and am happy its going to their roots. I just think you wouldn't have been satisfied either way. Plus how many Socom fans are going to be happy to play a destructalbe hd crossroads again. Sony so far has shown support for thier ps3 products fairly quickly, and will give us dl content and constant update for the Next Gen. just be happy for what it is.

I have played Socom series since month 1 of Socom 1. Not only that I have played in the same clan (@NUTZ@) since then, and we are still competitive today, making the championship game of the national socom league just this season.

I know Socom, and I know socom roots. Hell our clan sponsored the Crossroads map made by the sea snipers, you will see our logo and web address on it, if you are a big Socom fan.

This game looks like an HD version of S2. As much as I would love to play an HD, no cheater, bullets actually hitting people Socom 2, that is not next gen.

Character models looks alright, still nowhere near as good as GRAW, and I would state even Resistance looks smoother characters, and the enviorment is just plain solid, boxes, low res, no where near next Gen or even Resistance which was a launch game.

For example I would love if they where able to shoot the fruit stand, having individual fruit react explode roll off, and stand explode ect.. but it simply is not there.

If this is the only Socom game in development for the PS3, they have effectively put the nail in the coffin for this series in my mind. It looks really half assed.
Where is the destructable enviorment? I would love if they would add that, but the video I saw had the familarable industructable enviorment, with wooden railings stopping RPG's...

I hate being right.

Quote:
At its recent San Diego Gamers Day, Sony announced that SOCOM was headed for the PS3 in a new game titled SOCOM Confrontation. What's interesting about Confrontation, though, is that it's the first console SOCOM game from a developer other than Zipper (the original developers of the SOCOM franchise) -- it's being handled by the brand new developer Slant Six games (who are also handling SOCOM Tactical Strike on the PSP). In its SOCOM Confrontation presentation, Sony mentioned that Slant Six is working closely with Zipper on the two titles.

1UP confirmed with Sony that Zipper is still working on its own new SOCOM game for PS3, though it's still quite a ways off (perhaps Fall of 2008?). Our understanding is that, unlike SOCOM Confrontation, it will provide single-player and multiplayer gameplay, and the extra development time will allow Zipper to really do some new things with the franchise. But in case you were wondering what Zipper is up to, there you have it: two SOCOM games are officially headed to the PS3.
But it was kindof obvious. What else would Zipper have been primarily working on since SOCOM3?

personally no. It looks like HD version of Socom2, which was fun about 2 years ago when it first came out. I will probably still buy it, looks like a hold over till the TRUE Socom sequel comes out.

Default SOCOM - Next Generation

I noticed today that they'll be releasing "SOCOM - Confrontation" in the fall of this year.

I loved the first couple on PS2 but then got bored of the same shyte over and over. Any idea of what the next game will be like? The screen shots look pretty awesome.

Is it worth it buying Rainbow 6 - Las Vegas and what will the online play be like for this shooter?

It is a download title, and online only. It looks and will play like Socom2, but without cheating or serious lag. It looks like same game engine and just HD graphics, so if you are looking for something new or next gen, you will be disappointed.

This from a big Socom frachise fan and player. Zipper is at work at the true Socom sequel, but it will most likley not be out before X-mas 08.
