Default Petition for PS3 FLAC Support

I believe the PS3 is limited concerning audio codec support. It only supports the most common lossy codecs and wav. However I want to be able to rip my CDs using a lossless codec like FLAC. It takes less space than wav, is free, and has far better quality than any lossy one.

I hope Sony will add this codec in a future update. Anyone with me?

Meh, I don't really care either way. 160 kb/s AAC files sound surprisingly good coming out of the PS3 and take up a lot less space. I suppose just on principal I'd support but if it never happened I wouldn't feel any loss.

But while you're writing the petition maybe you should toss ogg vorbis audio files and mkv video files. That way all of the true geek formats are out of the way. (Are there any legitimate uses of the mkv format? The only use it seems to have is for pirated anime.)

What I'd be interested in better audio and video tag support. I'd like for audio files to be able to have multiple artists attached to a song. I'd also like both audio and video to have genre tags with support for multiple genres and possibly a Year tag. And support for chapter markers in video files would be nice. And I'd very much like copying songs from the PS3 to the PSP to came the tracks in order; what a pain that it puts them in alphabetical order (but it doesn't do this if you copy them direct to the memory stick from a computer if they have the track # as part of the file name).

I'd love to see .flac support on the PS3, I have hundreds of gigs of .flac's on my computer.

It's the most commonly used codec amongst the taping community of all the artists that allow fan recordings of their shows, so it is hand's down the most popular codec for lossless since it took over from shorten.

i'm with you. there's plenty of great open codecs out there that should eventually make their way into the PS3. flac would be great, personally i'm waiting for ogg.

I always say, F is for "future" and F is for "FLAC" . Sadly, F is also for "fickle chances Sony will support it in PS3 anytime soon".

I would sign a petition any time for this.

I don't think Sony have anything to do with tag options. But I like your ideas and hope they'll be implemented.
I don't own PSP, so I don't really know about the copy process from PS3. But if it's anything like you say, it really sucks!

And that is probably the reason we will never see official flac support on the PS3. The audio codec of choice for the bootleg community. Sony does have music divisions that may not like that.

But it is also the most popular lossless codec for people to rip their personal CD collections to their own media library. And, it is perhaps the leading lossless codec for legal downloads from artists 'websites, and download sites.

FLAC is a very "neutral" codec in regards to its uses. It is not a "bootleggers'" codec.

I'm talking about the legal taping community.
There are hundreds of artists that have taping policies and the codec of choice for archiving is .flac. It used to be .shn, but for several years now has been .flac16 and .flac24

Here's one such example:

Quote:
Taping

Dave Matthews Band allows audiotaping at almost every live performance. We feel that each show is unique and want to offer our fans the opportunity to recreate the live experience through the audio reproduction of our shows. At all taping authorized performances, tapers can tape from any ticketed seating location in the venue. Also, for many of these performances tapers are able to purchase tickets for a specially designated taper section, normally located immediately behind the soundboard. No soundboard or power feeds are provided.

Taping is limited to audio-only, using only microphones. Wireless receivers are strictly prohibited. We sincerely appreciate all of our fans, so we ask that you please be considerate of those around you by not obstructing anyone else's view of the performance.

When taper tickets are available for a particular show, they are released concurrently with general seating tickets. To obtain designated taper tickets, contact the venue's box office.

All recordings must be used for personal use or trading only. Selling or commercializing any recording is illegal and will jeopardize taping privileges for everyone. Please read our Bootleg Statement for more information.

In addition to helping fans recreate the live experience, we hope tape trading will foster greater interaction within the fan community. Any method of trading that does not involve personal fan interaction defeats the spirit of this goal of the taping policy and is not authorized. In particular, posting audio or video files on web sites for streaming to or downloading by the public, is not authorized.
