Lightbulb BackupHD-DVD program goes public - is this good or bad ?

Hello guys

I've read the latest articles about the HD-DVD back-up tool lately and I saw that yesteray the first version of BackupHDDVD-GUI v0.0.5 was launched by "Nomadic" another member of Doom9 who used the algorythm developped by "Muslis64", added some new features such as checking Volume Unique Key using CMAC algorithm and a GUI interface and lauched the first program of its kind that is accessible to everyone not only for those who understand Java programming and all that encryption procedure. For running the program Java Runtime Environment is needed. (for those iterested it can be downloaded at: <Removed by blue>

It seems that now more and more guys are working on completely understanding and decrypting HD-DVD and it seems most of the work is already done. From the point of view of the Studios supporting HD-DVD this is probably a very bad news, but if we think about the public things might look a bit different. It is very likely that more and more people will prefer HD-DVD because they could back-up their DVD and most probably share with friends and over the internet.

On the other hand 'work' has already began on the Blu-Ray system

but this seems more difficult to realize than HD-DVD. However this is proabably also only a matter of time.

I am wondering what if the encryption crack will have any impact on the format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

Waiting for your opinions.

Default It's just a matter of time

Cracking HD DVD and Blu-ray is just a matter of time. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

As far as backing up your HD DVD or Blu-ray is concerned... That's why managed copy is supposed to have been implemented. You shouldn't need to crack either HD DVD or Blu-ray to back them up.

The encryption hasn't been cracked. They found the player leaving the volume (media) keys around in memory.

The content has to be able to be decrypted, and that is done with the keys. So, really all they accomplished is doing what the player itself does with the data and the keys. There is nothing secret about that process.

The actual encryption system is completely intact. When the player is updated, and its current vendor key revoked (which allowes them to get the volume key) the exploit disappears for future titles (and current titles if the player is disabled), and they are back to step 1.

I view it as having to retighten the screws on something. The threads are not stripped and the bolts are not rounded so it can be done.

I do not like any form of copy protection. I believe that it hurts consumers and increases the price of the product. What needs to be done is crack down on those who make counterfeit copies and sell them to others. Companies are more interested in getting new consumers than catching new producers.

Edit: That guy Muslix is going after Blu-Ray full steam now. It's just a matter of time before he or someone else does it.
