I think with the improvements in larger televisions (even before HD and Blu) More people purchase movies rather than renting.... and also, since before DVD, VHS used to not be available for purchase until WELL AFTER the movie played in theaters, because it wasn't available for purchase until WELL AFTER it was available for rent.....
Now 4 months afer a movie is in theaters, you can not only rent it, you can BUY it... and since larger televisions have become more prominent, more people buy movies for repeated viewing. (I never would have thought about buying one of those giant monstrosities that were rear-projection, and looked like crap if you didn't sit directly in front of it, and 15 feet away!) My $0.02 |

I remember the days of waiting a year or more before you could buy the VHS movie. I am reliving that experience as July 4th will soon be here and STILL no Transformers on the radar. ![]() I figure the movies come out sooner for multiple reasons. #1, the studios want their money. #2, the studios know that fervor for the movie would die if you wait too long. #3, the studios know that bootleg copies could impact sales if they wait. #4, people want the movie. |

The funny thing about being able to buy movies on release date is that Blockbuster had the chance to have the same deal with DVD that they had with VHS (rent movies months before sale to general public) but they turned it down because they wanted more money.
