Default Onkyo TX-SR506 Wierd Setup, Plz Help

Hey guys, I bought this Reciever about two weeks ago and after reading some stuff on PCM and Bitstream I figured that the best way to get good sound is to go with the HDMI cable and not the Optical wire which I am currently using. My problem is that I am already running an HDMI cable from my PS3 to my HDTV and the Optical cable from the PS3 to the reciever. and the manual says that to use HDMI cable, I have to connect one HDMI from PS3 to receiver and then another HDMI cable from reciever to the HDTV AND another Optical cable from PS3 to the Reciever. and that last step is required only for 506 reciever. now what I wanna know is that will running the HDMI cables that way, along with the Optical cable make a difference? If not then I'd rather not waste money on another HDMI cable, and just keep my current setup. however if hooking up another HDMI cable along with the Optical will get me better sound and i'll happly buy another HDMI. Thanks for you help...

if i remember correctly, your receiver cannot do audio through hdmi. you would have to at least get a 605 or 606 for this. this is why they say a seperate audio connection is needed. sorry. since its only been two weeks, consider returning it for the other model. then at least you can use audio through hdmi and hear pcm, tru hd, and dts ma.

all optical will get you is dd and dts 5.1 unless your receiver can upconver video, you may not want to run hdmi to your receiver.

I have read many reviews on 605 and people are saying that 605 downconverts video quality, I am about to read some reviews on Yamaha V663, which has most of the same HD qualities of the 605 with better reliabilty and other stuff. and one thing that really has me confused is how do you connect a HDTV, a PS3, and the reciever with HDMI cables... and will there be loss of video or audio quality in doing so?

PS3 >>>> Receiver ( HDMI)
Receiver >>>>>> HDTV ( HDMI )
no loss depending on receiver ( 605 is good )

It will not downconvert a straight HDMI connection.

Meaning if you send 1080p via HDMI only, you will get 1080p.

The downconversion takes place when you input an Analog source and output it via HDMI.

Example, you connect your PS3 with the Component cables @ 1080p and you output it over the HDMI cable, it will then be scaled to 720p max.

Honestly, this is not something you should be concerned with.

Keep it all HDMI and you will have no problems.

Oh That makes a lot of sense, Thanks for clarifying it for me. Even the review on Cnet had me consfused about the downconversion part, but as long as I go with all HDMI, I'll be okay, so thanks. I was about to go with Yamaha RX-V663 which has almost the same features as 605 but its a big expensive for me.

Digital to Analog Converters.

Basically what converts the digital signal to analog out through the speakers.

Don't get me wrong, the Onkyo is a great receiver also. Go with what is economically feasible to you.

hey, i wouldnt need DAC's though right, cuz i'll be using HDMI's so it'll be all digital signals. Another thing about the Yamaha V663 is that My Subwoofer isnt powered one so I have to run the speakers through the sub then run them through to the reciever and i heard for V663 only powered subs work.

actually yes, you would still be using DAC's...the digital signal through the HDMI cable has to be converted to analog in order to output it through the speakers.

So Is there any way of getting decent Dolby Digital or DTS5.1 from 506?
