Default nOOb question about connecting PS 3 / TV / Sound System

Heya,
sorry for asking this question, I guess it has been asked already many times. I post it nevertheless in the hope to get a faster and more qualified answer (in confront to google it). Besides that I am pretty busy these days.

I apologies if it has been asked over 20 times before...

I finally got all my stuff together:

PS 3 40gb
Sony XBR4 52"
Onkyo 705

I have also a couple of hdmi cables (thanks to the tip of purchasing them at monorpice.com)

I hooked up the PS 3 with the TV with the hdmi cable.
I haven't hooked up the sound system yet, but will do it tomorrow (a friend is helping me because I have no clue about connecting sound system).

I thought that everything gets connected with everything with several hdmi cables.
But then I noticed that the PS 3 has only one hdmi port. Is that correct?

How do I connect the different systems with which cables?

If I conect the TV with the PS3 using the only hdmi port of the PS3, how I do I connect the PS3 then with the Onkyo system?

I guess I should also connect the Onkyo with the TV using an hdmi cable, is that right?

im not an expert on this, but im almost positive you run an hdmi cable from your ps3 to your receiver and then another hdmi cable from your receiver to your tv.

the receiver receives (hence the name receiver) the signal from the ps3 and sends it out to the tv and speakers.

Yes but once you want to setup your receiver, connect PS3->Receiver->TV (HDMI)

O.K. HDMI carries Video AND Audio...so....

PS3 to RECEIVER, RECEIVER TO T.V....

That's it....

now... for the time being (until you connect speakers etc...)

just do PS3 to T.V. and Enjoy!

Hook the PS3 to the AV Receiver (Onkyo) via HDMI.
Hook any other HD source (i.e. cable/sat) to the AV receiver via HDMI.
Hook any other sources to the AV Receiver with component/composite/S-video/etc.
THEN.. hook the AV Receiver to the HDTV via HDMI.

the ps3 (et al) will send the sound and video to the Onkyo via HDMI. It will decode the sound and play it and send the image to the TV.

HDMI supports BOTH sound and video in ONE cord.

To make it short: Hook 1 hdmi cable from ps3 to your onkyo. 1 cable from your onkyo hdmi out to your main hdmi input on your tv. Do this all with all items unplugged. Hook up your speakers. Then turn on your tv and onkyo, run your setup then audessy, then set up your ps3. Put in a blu ray crank it up and sit back and enjoy. If you have any more questions post here or pm me. Good luck

Thanks a lot guys.

Honestly I couldn't wait, and already connected the PS 3 with the Sony two days ago.
I just wanted to see the pq, and my chin dropped down

I am buying blue rays like crazy lately (I am Legend, I Robot, National Treasure, 300, Troy, etc.), and haven't watched even one (I want to wait until EVERYTHING is connected to feel the full experience).

The Sony is attached to the Bell'o TV stand.

It looks awesome, I only wished I could move the TV, but I couldn't find any TV mount stands at a reasonable price who could carry a 52" TV and do that.

As soon as everything is put together I am going to post some pics in the photo post.

Interesting btw, I wouldn't have thought of running the PS 3 cable to the Onkyo using it as a "middleman".

Thanks for the help, and if I should face any problems tomorrow evening I am going to post here again.
I really love this site!

only problem with using it as a middleman is you do lose some quality, unless the Onkyo has a digital chip inside that would keep the signal.

The more times the signal runs through the something, the more opportunity for it to mess up.

Most of these receivers use "passthrough" so that the quality of the image is not compromised.
