Angry PS3 owners - save your receipt

I have been having a problem with my PS3 and called Sony for help. The console will lock up even when it is at the system screen. Over several days I followed the instructions the Sony tech gave and nothing worked. I called again today and was told the unit was "defective".

I was told I could return it for a new one at no cost to myself. He then added all they need is my reciept, I told them I purchased the system on eBay. I heard that Japanese systems would not be serviced but did not realize this would extend to US made systems if you didn't have an original receipt from a B&M store.

I made two errors when trying to have tSony fulfill their warranty:
1. Sony will only warrant the system to the original purchaser. Lie to Sony.
2. Sony will only service a unit if you have a receipt. Say it was a gift maybe that will work.

I can understand the need for a receiipt if it was to prove the original date of purchase but not even a year has passed since the console was released. They could obviously look at the system and tell if it was misused so why isn't the warranty transferable? They want me to pay another 150 dollars to put it back in warranty.

Sony never warned anyone about buying the consoles on eBay. Why did they allow it to continue without saying anything? The only warning I read was about Japanese made systems imported on the grey market. The reason I thought people posted receipts on eBay when selling the systems was to prove they actually had the product. I learned my lessons.

1. Never buy anything with a warranty on eBay.
2. Never buy anything from Sony.

I went from a Sony supporter to adversary in less than ten minutes today. How many hundreds of thousands of other customers are like myself and are "out of warranty"? How many people call Sony each day and are told the same thing I am told? All because Sony had a shortage of products and could not deliver them to B&M stores in adequate supplies. All because I believed in Sony as a company.

I hope someone will read this and it will help out. Save that receipt. If you don't have it and need service do not tell them the truth. Lie and cross your fingers.

This is a major scourge on our society today, people who do the wrong thing and then blame everyone but themselves when it is obvious (even to them) that they are the only ones who have done anything wrong, and then have the audacity to whinge about it. If Sony want to protect themselves from people who purchase items through less than legitimate streams good on them. It's really common sense.

rebuy it at costco and then return that. They take anything back. Of course they need to be selling them there.

Bing! Perfect solution. (Buying it anywhere of course and then returning the faulty one, just don't tell them it's faulty, but that you don't have an HDTV or something)

Not to be mean, but aside from the technical issues, this wasn't Sony's fault at all. It isn't a company's responsibility to transfer warranties and such after it's been resold. That's basic legal language in almost every product being sold. The eBay seller should have provided you with the receipt and warranty notice if they had it. But again, Sony's not responsible for the product after it leaves the hand of the original owner.

This is where you went wrong.

Sorry, but you made some bad decisions and lying certainly isn't going to change that fact.

I really have no respect for any of this at all. Take responsibilty for your own actions and decisions. I know I may as well be speaking Martian when I dare to invoke that almost extinct concept here in today's society, but here there it is anways because it's the truth.

You @#$%ed up, not Sony. It's your fault. It's as simple as that.

Or let them know theres something wrong with it. They will return it to Sony (where it belongs).

Im sorry if this sounds devious in some way, but a system thats been out for two months shouldnt have problems, and if it does, its Sony problem.

That's right. It's right there in black and white, clear as day.

If this goes south, then the OP can start raising hell with Ebay and the seller and get satisfaction that way. That's honest and on the record, all the way.

No manufacturer of any product anywhere in the world will allow transferrable warranties. I work at a audio/video distributor in Toronto. We've handled Faroudja, Loewe, Sunfire etc... nobody does that. The monkey who sold it to you through e-Bay has to take the unit back and give you your cash back. Nothing you buy second hand or through a non-authorized dealer has any warranty whatsoever. Contact the e-Bay seller and kick his ass.

Don't know how much you paid, but most likely too much if it was on Ebay. That seller owes you a receipt. If they don't have one, they may still be able to get a copy based on where they bought it. Considering they gouged you for a profit, maybe they could take the time to track down a receipt for you...

Aww hell, I'll bite:

Explain to us, please, how this is Sony's fault and how "they are being asses"?

And just so you know everything I bought on ebay NIB came with a warranty so far, ipod, Tivo, used Dell pc all of these items have warranties.
Your luck can run out. It's as simple as that.

Despite that, the OP's best recourse is to start wrangling through Ebay and doing it that way if the seller fudges and/or can't come up with a receipt.

No receipt? No proof of purchase? No manufacterer is under any obligation to provide you a damned thing. It's very simple, really.

Since you got your PS3 on eBay, your *claim* is invalid.

Ok let me see if I can sort this out.

Someone bought a PS3 from a store. They are the first owner.

Someone else "a Second person" buys from the first owner on Ebay. That person is the second owner.

Am I missing something?

there should be no questions asked in the first year from launch, since the products hasn't even been out a year yet.

That said, I'd just purchase it somewhere else, return your defective one and call it a day. The B&M's get 100% credit for them from SONY and you would just be working around the system. Some may say thats "Unethical" I think that SOny not honoring their warranty due to loop hole (your not the original purchaser/don't have receipt) is just BS. especially when the thing came out only 3 months ago.

The OP of this thread bought it via middleman on Ebay, second hand.

either way, the product is within warranty...it shouldn't matter if it's bought and sold 10 times in that period, if it's under one year...IMO it should be covered. And you shouldn't need a receipt when it's been less that one year since it's been launched.
