I just need 2 new Def Tech's for my surround backs. I just got my Onkyo 805 7.1 a week ago today. So hopefully in the next month I'll pick up some speakers.

7.1 is truly bliss. I have a 7.1 4-ohm theater setup run by Crestron. Nice 130x7 plus whole house audio. In the immortal words of Ferris Bueller:..If you have the means I definitely recommend picking one up.

Wonder few yrs down the road, where else they will have us sticking speakers to get 9.1, 12.1

I find 5.1 to be pretty adequate, and 7.1 hasn't really "rocked my world" but I think when more movies do better encoding in 7.1 then maybe it'll be more noticeable.... or when I get my gear into a dedicated theater, a larger space may benefit me more, but my current viewing room is about 24 Feet long, and 15 feet wide or so..... so it's by no means "small" but 7.1 is a lot of speakers..... I think 5.1 can replicate the sound quite nicely.... just my opinion I guess.

Yeah I know what you mean.. I think the movies may need a better 7.1 encoding as you said.. Sometimes not much is happening in the back surrounds.. Well I guess sometimes it is better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it ..

I'm sorry but I'm completely at a loss here..... in pretty much EVERY thread that someone mentions getting a 7.1 setup after having 5.1 etc... it's always.....

"Wake up the neighbors" "Piss off the neighbors" "shake the walls"

etc.... if it were going from a 7.1 to 7.2 or 5.1 to 5.2 etc... o.k.... but the REAR AND SIDE SURROUNDS are NOT providing loud, pounding bass, or shrill treble..... mostly it's background scores, subtle sounds, "motion" such as wind etc.....

Even if you put Floor-Standers with 15" woofers for your surrounds, you're going to destroy the tweeters on the fronts/center LONG BEFORE you get deep pounding bass from the surrounds.... (exception being SACDs etc)

The idea of having more speakers isn't to make it louder...... besides, when you had the 5.1 prior to going 7.1, how many times did you turn up the volume to the furthest possible level ???

I like to watch movies with the sound fairly loud to pick up the small details, and nuances of the film....... and even to feel the explosions from the sub, but LOUDER DOES NOT EQUAL BETTER.

Nah it's just mean : Put the Volume HIGH.. even if you don't have much bass, high volume will indeed wake the neigborg

You can see in my sig the stuff i have speaker wise. Add 2 ADP-190 from the same company.

I understand that... I'm just saying adding two speakers to your system isn't going to cause noticeable decible increases........ arghh.. oh well....

I used my rear surrounds for Fronts at one time.... but now, as surrounds.... they never get pushed like they did for the short time they were my mains.........

7.1 here and love it, sure there could be more movies out there. Watched The Eye last night. crappy movie but great 7.1 DTS-MA sound. Almost tempted to buy just for that reason alone.

I know i've seen the reason somewhere, but someone tell me why the PS3 doesn't stream the 7.1 DTS-MA on The Orpanage/Pan's Labrynth/?One other one? but does work on The Eye and Semi-Pro?

It's truly worth having.

Even if most movies are still 5.1...it just sends a message.

Better to have it and not use it...you know ;o )

I've been 7.1 for about 5 years now and I have never once regreted it.

Enjoy your new rig man,

7.1 certainly doesn't make your system louder however I love it when in the movie cars they come to find whatever his name is (the red car) when the helicopter comes into action it seems as if it flys right over you and beyond.

I am a big fan of 6/7.1 when it is done right.

Your receiver is providing the rear surrounds for you.
Cars is PCM 5.1 your system must be running PCM + DDEx

all I am talking about is hearing something in 6/7.1 sound I am not saying the disc is in 7.1. . saying the effects of having the extra channels is a treat for the ears.

it is great when they do get the audio right on 7.1 audio as well.

So do you wait any film from LUCASFILM - like Howard, the duck or Legend as the Uncompressed PCM 7.1 as the Perfect CINEMA FEELING in your "living/movie" room ????!!!!
So PLEASE Big GEORGE and STEVEN (Spielberg) do it as soon as the StarWars BI-Trilogy and INDYssss will come onto BluRay GALAXY ?!?!?!?!
