I think everyone's over the moon there with uni announcing 100 titles this year (which I doubt, actually...) but they now all are saying that I'm spreading FUD saying that it was 300 titles announced worldwide.

There are a number of references to press releases in this thread, I didn't follow the links.
Just one question why bother. A number of people seem to be living a in fact free zones. As I frequently say here Never argue with an idiot as they drag you down to their level then beat you with experience. The more HD-DVD disc's the fudsters buy the better. When in a few years their player dies they will be left with a pile of useless (but expensive) plastic. My apologies to all the innocent people that will be caught up.

Oh and Dave Mack, their 2007 300 number is based on the 300 they released in 2006, which, when I counted the actual disc titles, were only 212. Unless they released another 80+ titles in Antartica

Sure. Everyone remember this, it is the official word on 2007 HD DVD BS:

CES Press Release

Quote:

worldwide, Warner Home Video, Paramount Home Entertainment, Universal
Studios Home Entertainment, HBO Home Video, New Line Home Entertainment,
Genius Product, Inc., The Weinstein Company, Studio Canal, and Bandai
Visual, one of the largest animation companies in the world, collectively
announced more than 300 additional HD DVD titles will be released this
year.

The fanbois ignore such things and immediately bloat the numbers anyway. 600 total since launch has become 600 new titles this year.

And if it turned out to be 100, they'd all scream out how wonderful a year it was and how HD DVD once again exceeded expectations.

Rather than being stuck in June 2006, I need to revise my assessment. They are stuck in "1984".

True, guys!

Anyways, I did find it. It was actually on Toshiba's own site! "The look and sound of..."
And the thread was removed!
Today's hilarity has all the HDdvd owners (except for a few VERY vocal holdouts who are trying to hold their ground as the rest of the delusional pack closes in...) now saying that "combos are GOOD...!"
So funny. Last month, 90% of owners in a poll hated them. Now the majority think they're good.

I think what we are seeing is the super-zealots who are there to spin absolutely everything positively for HD DVD.

So, now combos are great!

The reality is the buying public hates them. And Universal is doing it so they don't have to spend any money preparing extras (the DVD side will carry the extras). At the minimum, a re-encoding for HD DVD would be necessary, even for the SD extras on the DVD.

Cheap out move by Universal. Which does not bode well for the IME they say they are interested in providing.

Can you all clarify what is being said here? I saw on another website how Universal are releasign 200 titles on H.D.-D.V.D. Don't know what the hell that means but it sound like a SERIOUS slapdown to Blu-Ray. Especially since I thought Blu-Ray had just about every other company on their side...what's up? How will Blu-Ray be able to compete now? Sounds like H.D.-D.V.D. just won.

Oh, 100 titles...not 200.

From TheDigitalBits.com:

(LATE UPDATE - 1/25/07 - 4 PM PST)

Afternoon, everyone. I just wanted to jump in here with some late-breaking high-def news. Universal, presumably to make up for their relative silence at CES, has just announced that they're planning more than 100 exclusive releases on the HD-DVD format in 2007... and they've revealed at least a few new titles that are on the way (if not specific release dates). The first 40-50 of these will be available in the first half of 2007, starting with Brokeback Mountain (now available) and Hollywoodland (on 2/6). Also on the way to HD-DVD in 2007 according to the studio (90% of the titles as DVD/HD-DVD Combo releases) are new films like Children of Men, The Good Shepherd and Smokin' Aces, as well as classic catalog titles like Scarface, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Bruce Almighty, The Bourne Identity, Meet the Fockers, American Pie, Inside Man, Pride & Prejudice, The Big Lebowski, Liar Liar, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Brazil, Erin Brockovich, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Slap Shot and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The studio also confirmed that the first season of Sci-Fi's new Battlestar Galactica will be released on HD-DVD this year, as well as additional TV series titles yet to be announced. There's definitely some cool titles in that list, and presumably more (and more details) will be announced at a later date. It'll be great to see Lebowski and Brazil in HD, that's for sure... and the prospect of Battlestar has us pretty excited too.

By the way, as it happens today, I had the chance to speak directly with senior Universal reps this afternoon for a story about their HD-DVD support and the format war in general. So watch for lots more on this subject here at The Bits next week.

Stay tuned...!

My guess is that the studios behind Blu-ray will also release a significant title count this year.

They only need to release around 25 titles each to match Universal's 100 - I imagine they will do more. I vaguely recall that Sony alone has promised 100 titles for 2007...

paidgeek announced this intent (100 titles in NA) in the Insider's Thread.

So, Universal is checked by Sony.
Warner will be catching up and releasing day and date for new stuff: Advantage BD
Paramount is basically even all the way.
Disney + Fox + MGM + Lionsgate are all exclusive

Estimates for titles in North America in 2007

Blu-ray:

Sony: 100
Warner: 24 (catchup) + 48 (new)
Paramount: 36
Disney: 72
Fox: 72
MGM: 36
Lionsgate: 36
--------------
424

HD DVD:

Warner: 48
Paramount: 36
Universal: 100
Weinstein: 18
-------------
202

424 - 202!! Plus probably Universal BD titles from Japan.

Gary
