I'll describe the situation in the shops I go to the most often :
Gibert (once ony a bookshop, now sells lots of DVDs and CDs, often used) : began selling Blu-ray in june 2007 with only a line on a shelf and HD DVD on the lower shelf, and DVDs in the others (about 25") ; near december only half HD DVD replaced by Blu-rays ; in march 3 lines with Blu-ray including about 8 HD DVD - 2 Transformers never sold! ; now : 3 lines full of Blu-ray, still the same 8 HD DVD and one line with the recent Blu-rays face front. FNAC (most popular multimedia France shop) : began selling Blu-rays at PS3 release (end march 2007), once a big display (95" height, 50" large) with 6 lines : half for Blu-ray and HD DVD) ; september 2007 : 3.5/6 for Blu-ray ; december 2007 : 4/6 for Blu-ray ; march 2008 : 4.5/6 for Blu-ray ; may 2008, long display (replaced the one for new released DVD, lots of passage) (65" height, 110" large), 90% blu-ray, 10 % HD DVD. I spoke with the sales assistant often in this period, he was quite sure Blu-ray would win from the start, and HD DVDs would slowly disappear from the display and he informed customers from december 2007 HD DVD would die soon. HD TVs sell most regularly here in France since Xmas 2007, the XBOX360 in Europe never really seemed the obvious choice as in USA, and the PS3 sales have been better for about 6 months, the guys I know bought a X360 just because it was released sooner and you can play "burned" (= free) games on it. The Wii sells quite well her but most people play it for 2 weeks and it gathers dust after (quite sure it's like that everywhere). I'm quite sure the 250 Euros mark will be the trigger to make sales go mad for Blu-ray players, as there are ads often on TV and magazines. |
