Default Two questions

3 more days before I can buy my PS3
I have 2 questions though.

- I have bought Resident Evil 4 to play while waiting for the fifth. Do I need to buy a PS2 memory card or can I save games on the PS3 hdd?

- I have Direct TV in the living room (where the PS3 will be) and cable internet only in my bedroom. How can I get my PS3 connected to the net?
Do I need to get a second modem?

Thanks.

1) No you do not need a PS2 memory card. There is a Memory Card emulator built into the PS3 so the game will think it is saving to a card but it is actually saving to the hard drive.

2) I suggest getting a wireless router and just connecting the PS3 wirelessly.

wireless is easier, but you can buy a second modem for a wired connection.

Addendum to #1 (which probably doesn't apply to OP): If you buy the USB/memory card adapter, you can take an existing PS2 memory card with all your saves on it and then make a copy of it and continue to play your PS2 games on your PS3 from where you left off. UNLESS your PS3 is not PS2BC. I wonder if the PS2 memory card emulator works in the non-BC PS3s. If so, I wonder if that is a sign for things to come...

Wouldn't a second modem require a second ISP account across separate wiring? Can you have (for example) two DSL modems in different parts of the house splitting your overall bandwidth?

The 40GB PS3 will not play PS2 games. You have to get the 80GB version or an older 60GB model to play PS2 games.

Secondly, get a wireless router, the PS3 has a built in wireless network card.

I think a wireless setup is more complicated to get working than a wired connection...

No

You would just buy a router, plug the dsl to the router plug both internet devices to the router, if you choose a wired solution make sure you have enough cable to cover both devices...

The way I have it, the router has my isp user and pass in it, the silver cord is run to the router, and a black Ethernet to the ps3, yellow to a computer or a visiting laptop.

indeed it is. wired is just plug N play. but wireless you're not restricted to a cable jack. you can put your PS3 anywhere(wired to the TV mind you).

Thanks all for the replies.
I'm getting the 80gb MGS4 bundle.

Also is this one any good?
http://shop4.frys.com/product/477424...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG
So I could get it today, obviously I want to spend as little as possible on it.

And Pelican170, why is it harder to set up a wireless connection?
I've never done that before but do I have to open port for my firewall or things like that?

Well, ive tried this a few times on a few different ps3 of mine and friends and ive never been able to get it to work, but with a wired connection, you just basically plug it in and the auto set up thing does most of the work for you. For DSL though id assume you will have to put in your login and password?

also beware, some wireless router brands(like belkin) will lose signal when using a cordless phone with GHz of 2.4 or lower. 5.6 GHz works fine though.

Going wired seemed like more of a hassle to me. My desktop computer and my PS3 were in different rooms and I didn't want to run cables all over the house.

Wireless was much easier.

I tried a Belkin first, and it had all sorts of issues, tried a Linksys next - no problems and works like a champ. (Although, I have read others who had issues with Linksys - so, who knows.)

@OP, once I got my router hooked up, took me a few minutes to get my PS3 connected. Been working great ever since. (Plus, being wireless, I am able to stream my music, videos, and photos from my computer to my PS3).

Yeah, some do. I had one in the kitchen that kicked me off everytime (my other three didn't.) Everytime the phone rang, my Warhawk game crashed. I got rid of that phone quick. It worked fine after that with my of 2.4 GHz phones.

Now, I have only cellphones - so, no more problems.
