Default Rumor: 40g PS3 to be Backwards compatible
I was talking to a Sony Rep. about Home the other day at work. I was being amazed by all the features going to be in Home, until he told me this.

"August or September there will be an update allowing 40gig PS3's to be backwards compatible."

I'm glad I bought a 40 and saved $100.

Make it play SACDs and I'll be impressed I never owned a PS or PS2, so the gaming aspect doesn't concern me.... SACD would be cool (but I have a couple dedicated players, so it's not a big deal)

For what it's worth...

I don't believe it. The compatibility status of the 40Gb will not change. That's my guess anyway.

We shall see.

SERIOUSLY?

I just started a thread on how I regret getting the 40G.. :P

Since I just realized after a couple months... more games I'd prefer to play are on PS2....



and I also get the $100 off.. $299 spankin new PS3~~

I posted this in Off Topic, I didn't realize there was a PS3 board.

A Sony Rep. told me that in August or September the 40gig will have an update making it backwards compatible.
This seems pretty cool. There are a few PS2 games I'm looking forward to playing.

this is the first im hearing of this. if it is indeed true, that would be pretty sweet. but from what i understood it wasn't a software issue. i understood that the 40 gig didnt have the hardware to be BC.

I read somewhere else that they are planning to add PS2 games for download to the PSN store in October, and that there would be an update to allow all PS3s to play PS2 games by then.

It's software. The 40 and 80 have the same hardware, except for multiple USB ports and memory card slots.

80 is on select titles now.
It uses emulation. Not all PS2 games are backwards compatible even on the 80.
