Default PS3 not over-rated, XBOX 360 is

I have heard a lot of HD DVD fanboys complain about how overated the PS3 is. They always talk about how much better the XBOX 360 is and all that. First, the XBOX 360 does have a way better selection of games. Gears of War is much more impressive then Resistance. However, when we look at the engineering of the two consoles there is a significant difference between them. I never realized how crappy the actual engineering of XBOX 360 was until a friend brought his over to play Gears of War (a very impressive game I might add). The first thing I noticed was the huge external power brick. I heard it had an external power supply, but this thing is ginormous. Then there is the fact that you have to buy a wireless adapter for the system for about $99. The system does not support HD discs without the external drive. Though I could imagine how that must be with an external HD DVD, power brick and system itself. Another thing I hated was the lack of HDMI. I had to use component cables, and couldnt connect to my receiver because I dont use optical cables (HDMI exclusively for me). Then finally the sound of the machine is slightly annoying. I cannot imagin watching a movie on this thing. To have that whir in the background at quiet parts of movies.

The PS3 is just a better machine period. Quieter, Better designed, Better features, and High Definition movie support. The only thing it lacks right now is games. But that will change in the coming months. For all the things you get out of this machine, $599 is not a bad deal for the customer. XBOX 360 on the other hand will cost you $498 (with wireless adapter). So you get no High def movies, no HDMI, 40 GB smaller hard drive for a savings of $99. Wow thats a rip off.

Well i think the games on both suck.

Most (at least 90%) of the games on the X-Box 360 are War games and no-one outside of america likes shooting & killing things all the time, but it's definately in americans' nature to be destructive and shoot things so hey.

But at least there are games on that, the PS3 doesn't have any games at all.

I think both are over-rated & a waste of money.

Get out in the world people!

I own a 360 with a ton of games. Without Gears of War, the xbox 360 is a crap system. GOW takes the 360 from a "its ok" level, to "well, no other way to play gears, so gotta own one just for that".

If gears was not on the 360, i wouldnt think MS would have sold 1/2 what its sold by now. According to NPD, they've only SOLD 4.6 Mil consoles in the US and gears of war has sold over 3 million copies. Imagine if gears wasnt there. MS should be getting knee pads to thank epic and cliffy.

p.s. - I just got done playing gears for over 6 hours strait, it ****ing rocks.

I am actually one of the few who got bored with Gears very quickly.

I too have both systems, and enjoy both very much.

Right now, both systems have most of the same multiplatform titles and come March is when some of the good PS3 exclusives are going to start showing up.

So making idiotic comments like

...just doesn't even begin to make any sense, like the rest of that post.

They're basically about the same thing, game wise, except the PS3 has much better hardware, long term potential, and the whole BD thing.

They're both good systems. The 360 has the advantage of having been out for an entire year so OF COURSE it's going to have more games going for it and more exclusives.

I'm a PC gamer so I'm kind of jaded.

Hmm I guess you've never played Kameo, Project Gotham Racing 3, Fight Night Round 3, Burnout Revenge, Viva Pinata or Oblivion. All amazing games on the 360.

We also have Blue Dragon coming out in a couple months.

Actually the 360 has a more powerful GPU in it. Unified VRAM and Unified Shader architecture, 2 things the PS3's GPU lacks.

Actually the one thing that ends up making the PS3 inferior graphically isn't the CPU or GPU though, it's simply RAM. There is a 256MB limit for program memory and 256MB limit for graphics. Since the 360's RAM is unified it can use more for GFX and less for the program if the developers wish and it can change dynamically.

I have a PS3 and all I do with it is watch BDs and play Final Fantasy XII (a PS2 game).

As a gaming system I am much more pleased with the 360 so far, but those BDs sure look nice.

Much better designed aesthetically, I'll definitely give you that. Better features, sure if we're talking "bullet-point" stuff. $599 is definitely a great deal compared to the 360 for what you get in the console. And I would never watch HD-DVDs on the current 360 with its loud-as-a-harrier-jet fan mechanism. Imagine how much louder it would be with an additional HD-DVD drive making noise too .

Sony REEEEEALLY screwed up when designing the architecture on the gaming side of things with the PS3 though. The Cell's design is an innefficient use of multiple cores that aren't even full processors in themselves like the 360's, and 256 MB of ram each going to the program and gfx sides is not enough.

The 360 gets around this by unifying its 512 MB of RAM so more can be allocated to one side if needed, but the PS3 can't do this.

Actually to everyone outside of the US all of it made sense, but then i don't expect you to understand anything intelligent or written in english.

Anwyas, i was saying at least there are an array of games in numbers which there aren't (at least in the UK) for the PS3.

Wow, that was hard to work out.

I don't play any games, but if they are XBOX 360 games then they probably count for the other 10%.

If they are PS3, then i haven't seen them in the UK yet (Advertised i mean since the system aint even out yet).

Sorry, i didn't realise politics weren't allowed.

But my intention was just to highlight the FACT that XBOX 360 have targetted americans, particularily 13-21 year olds with their war games & combat games.

Anything involving shooting basically.

They may have good or even great storylines, but still at the core- they are shoot em ups.

Kameo is a soulless game with decent graphics and crappy gameplay. Its so forgettable, i forgot i even own it. Project Gotham Racing is decent fun, but its insanely repetitive, with just barely above average graphics and its neither arcade game nor sim so it does NOTHING right. Fight Night Round 3 was pretty fun but also avail on the ps3. Burnout revenge is also pretty fun but it also gets tiresome, although this one at least lets you KNOW its more of a arcade racer and the graphics are pretty decent. Viva Piniata i'd enjoy more if i were 12, wearing braces, and a chick. Oblivion i hated. I cannot stand western rpg's, they feel so unbalanced, so technical, and worst of all, feels like work instead of a epic adventure.

Blue Dragon sounds and looks great. I will get it for sure. Too bad it failed miserably in japan and will probably fail in the US as well. 360 owners are mostly shooter and western rpg fans.

BTW, whos the "We" in the above statement you made? Be a GAMER first, dont take sides. I play the best games on all systems, i dont take sides unless i hear BS being spouted out.

What I don't think you get is the fact that the memory speed of the PS3's 256MB graphics memory is over twice that of the 512MB Xbox360. That means the PS3 can handle 512MB is less time than the Xbox 360. That means it is not less capable in the memory department...period

Default Response to Rivera213

Let me preface this by saying I am an American who owns neither a PS3 or a 360 (proud Wii owner since '06) and who does not own a gun or play many FPS games.

I usually peruse this forum and don't post anything but Rivera213's posts seemed a bit misleading so I thought I'd post some observations:

1) I ventured over to the official Xbox website and for the 360 they listed the following numbers: 108 racing games, 210 sports games, 281 action games, and 90 shooter games. If my math is right then that means shooters make up 13% of 360 games not 90% and if we are talking specifically "war games" then it may be fewer still.

2) As for the PS3, by my count there are 30+ games available specifically made for the PS3 and that doesn't take into account the PS2 and PS games that you can play on it. I went the the amazon website website for the UK and according to them the PS3 wont be available there until March so if you can't find many PS3 games there then that would make sense.

Lastly, regarding the America bashing: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
