Default Has the 80GB MGS PS3 got the 65nm Cell?

With all of the questions regarding the new 80GB MGS PS3 and what cell processor it has, I performed a test.

I took my new Monster PRO3500 power conditioner, and took turns connecting my 20GB PS3 which has the 90nm cell, and my new 80GB MGS PS3. Each time I got a reading, the PS3 was the only component connected to the power conditioner.

Let me make it clear that I'm not an electricity expert, I just wanted to see if one consumes more power than the other.

First was the 20GB PS3. After turning on the PS3 and letting it run for approximately 5 minutes, the power conditioner indicated a peak amperage of 1.6. Picture:

Next was the 80GB PS3. After turning on the PS3 and letting it run for approximately 5 minutes, the power conditioner indicated a peak amperage of 1.2. Picture:

So based on my not so professional test, it appears that these new 80GB MGS PS3s have the 65nm cell.

This does not confirm that there is a 65nm cell in the new 80 gig ps3's. Your 20 gig has a emulator chip that consumes more power to run. It also means there is more internally in your 20 gig then your 80 gig. To me this shows the new 80 gigs are still running the 90nm cell chip. Of course I could be wrong.

80 gig still is 90nm. They are not done with the PS2 emulation via software yet, so they just made more of the old systems. Soon the 80 gig will be the 40 gig system but 100% software emulation to save on costs.

You guys could be right, I just thought I'd do a test to see what I could find out. I thought is was interesting that the 80GB used 25% less power than the 20GB. Date of manufacture is April 2008 by the way.

W00t so i was right lol nice, it should be the 65nm processor as the MGS4 bundle is just a pre-release of the June 29th 80gb PS3 comming out which is the 65nm processor.

Now if we can confirm if it is software or hardware emulation all will be set. According to BBY sales rep this is hardware emulated but I have no way to know how to test that.

Play a blu-ray title and then compare the current/amp draw between the two might give a more realistic comparison.

The 40/80gig 90nm cell should draw a noticable amount of more current than the 40.

Quote:
PS3 40go: Consumes 135W of energy while playing a Blu Ray disc
PS3 60&80gb: Consumes 180W of energy while playing a Blu Ray disc

Hmmm FWIW, the 1.2A / 1.6A ratio exactly matches the 135W / 180W ratio. I agree that this may not be conclusive especially considering the full hardware emulation in the PS2 as others mentioned. I'll keep my fingers crossed until a follow up test is provided or someone out there opens up their PS3.

When playing a disc, the numbers stayed the same. There was no increase when a disc played.

I also forgot to mention that when in standby mode, the 20GB showed a 0.1, and the 80GB showed a 0.0.

As has been stated before the 80GB PS3 with MGS4 is supposed to be a pre-release of the June 29th 80GB unit. The June 29th unit has the 65nm cell processor, the biggest question is going to be if this has software or hardware emulation for PS2 playback. The power specs shown here match the 40GB power specs with the 65nm processor, so if im correct the manuals shipped with these new 80gb units are probably old leftovers sony has sitting around.

I too woudl love to see if this is real as well. I am in the midst of selling my 60 gig ps3 and getting an 80 gig bundle. If this is true I will be waiting till June 29th to get one. Please share a link.

I must have missed that day at school - but I knew there was the June 12th bundle, but what is the June 29th?

Is that the limited edition? Where will that sell?

Its not the bundle its just the standalone 80gb unit

Unfortunately for hard info thats what I have been looking for as I stated before this is what a BBY employee told me in accordance with there in store computers. I have spent the past few days looking for confirmation as well.
