Default New Home Theater System

Hi all, I am in the process of saving for a new Home Theater system and I wanted to post the picks I have made so far and get some input. Currently I have a 37" Box TV with a Sony Audio Receiver connected and 3 Soundstage speakers. Them there is a DVD player a PS3 and a Wii.

I can't afford to go crazy when I purchase my new system, but I want to spend enough to at least get good quality for Gaming and Movies. I live in Canada so the prices I will pay are higher that the ones I see reference on these pages most times.

Ok this is what I have researched and this is what I will be looking to get:

TV
Samsung LN46A650

Receiver
Onkyo 7.1 Home Theater Rec with HDMI TXSR606B

Speakers
Haran Kardon 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System HKTS15

Blu-ray Player
PS3
- but I am thinking of also getting a stand alone BD Player and I need suggestions, I know there are a number of new modeles to be available in 08' and I will not be purchasing one until Sep/Oct. Any suggestions. I have budgeted about $500 for one.

Universal Remote
Logitech Harmony 550 Universal

Cables

HDMI - Monster Cables HDMI1000HD Series
Sub-woofer Cables - ??
Speaker Wire - ??

Please review my list and provide input, as well as suggestions on a stand alone BD Player.

Thanks
B

Stay away from Monster, get better speakers they are the most important link in the chain. Spend as much as you can on speakers, because it does not matter what your system is putting out if your speakers are not up to it. If you need to get front speakers first and save for the rest as you go, your system will be much better in the long run.

Get your cables from Monoprice and use the extra money to step up your speakers.

Definitely go with Monoprice.com for speaker wire, banana plugs, and a subwoofer rca plug.

Speakers are a tricky business. If you can, audition as many different brands as possible and go with the ones that sound good to you for the price you want to pay.

I know SVS subs are expensive, but if you can affort it, go with ANY of the SVS sub models. They are amazing.

Good luck, and enjoy the process.

For about $100 more, you can get the Onkyo 805. It's a better reciever. You should also get a pair these Polks. Go to Monoprice.com for cables. There shouldn't be anywhere else you should go for cables. The 606 is no where near as good as the 805 FYI. From what I've heard, SVS subs are some of the best. You can't go wrong with them.

agreed.

monoprice.com for cables.

Amazing the difference in price at monoprice. So I am looking into plugs right now actually. I have seen a bunch of them and for some reason, the tips do not look all the same. However is my understanding correct in that all banana plugs will universally plug into any speaker's binding post?? I am going with the closed end plugs. This might be in crack's sticky actually.

Thanks

If you're looking to save some money, I wouldn't go above the 606. Point of diminishing returns with your other equipment. I'd recommend an Onkyo 604 if you can find one cheap (there was a guy selling one on this forum actually) or a 605 refurb.
