Due to this article:
![]() http://biz.yahoo.com/nytimes/080614/...9060.html?.v=3 I am now trying to find out how many bytes online gaming consumes through my internet connection. If I play one to two hours a day would I exceed a 40 gig cap in no time? If so, I would jump ship the day comcast puts this new "business model" into place |

online gaming does not take up nearly as many bytes as you would think it does.
it all varies game to game, but you should be fine. |

40 gigs is a LOT. I don't know actual numbers but I would think that you'd have to put in some serious game playing to exceed that. I guess it also depends on how much porn you're downloading too

I agree with this entirely. I heard on This Week in Tech and read on Digg that it is there way to jump into billing us for this kind of stuff before it's a big deal but down the road, 40 gig is going to be a very average number with all of the HD content that is being put online. I am totally against this and will abandon Comcast as soon as FiOS comes to town.

There are a lot of factors that would play into this. For example each game is going to have different byte rates... and those are most likley going to fluctuate depending on if you are in game or in a lobby...
When you power on PS3 and it signs you into the network.. just using the cross media bar, you are going to have a low byte rate.. but if you start up the Playstation store you are going to start using larger byte rates.. now if you watch previews on the PSN again they go up.. again depending on how large / long preview is... also pixel junk monsters is not going to use same bandwidth as COD4... but that should go as understood... of course than how long do you play COD4? I am glad I do not live in a comcast area... that is all I got to say about that. |

In Canada, we have 2 'big box' companies you can say, Bell and Rogers, and the majority of people go with Rogers (even companies) because its, 1. Cable internet. 2. Requires no password to log in the internet and 3. Offers many different speeds, plus, Rogers is the most reliable internet provider you can get. Well Rogers introduced this 'you go over your limit, we take your money!' and they bill you a certain amount per KB i'm guessing. I find this absolutely stupid, all this is because they want to stop the downloading of illegal movies, games and applications through bittorrents and such, but what about the people who arn't doing that but they are downloading extremely large bytes of data? Are they SOL? Basically. Streaming to my PS3, will cost me, downloading from my PS Store, will cost me, anything that is using the internet, is costing me, even though it's completely legal. Quote:
1000 people can be downloading illegal HD movies that are 15GB, and the internet speed for other users, will still be the same. Unless your company is constantly crashing and your internet is always down, then they are feeding you BS. |
