Exclamation The Power of ONE Red Ant

Ok...A lot of us are aware that Home Media Magazine routinelly runs polls in its website, and the results are published in their weekly magazine edition(Hence my excuse for posting this thread under "Blu-ray Technology and News). Last night I noticed a new poll in the website with the following heading: "What is the role of Blu-ray in the home entertainment market?" The voting options are: To replace DVD, To supplement DVD, and It's a niche product without wide appeal. I voted for the first option and the results were around: To replace DVD 56%,To supplement DVD 7%, and It's a niche product without wide appeal 37%. I checked a couple ot times last night and this morning and the ratios remained the same with very little "action". However, everything changed at around 8 AM today. I noticed that the % for "It's a niche product without wide appeal 37%" had increased; in fact as I refreshed the page it just kept increasing. "Something" just did NOT seem normal. So I voted again for "To Replaced DVD" and noticed that the vote was counted again. Apparently, you can vote as many times as you want and the poll will count the vote. I did my "format war" imitation and voted for 10 minutes, but it was an exercise in futility. The opposing voter (Red ant) voted and voted for three straight hours (I checked occasionally, and he was still at it) until the option of "It's a niche product without wide appeal" had over 60% of the votes Then he stopped voting, guess he accomplished his mission. Sorry for the rant, just wanted to make a couple of points. FIRST, the polls from HMM are 100% garbage and do not deserve ANY consideration. SECOND, there are STILL some isolated Red Ants that really DESPISE Blu-ray.

Well it was on line poll done through a magazine that is geared to a niche readership. Also, if it was just one red ant, or a thousand red ants, or genuine opinion (because that is possible as well), it doesn't matter. This red ant can vote in an online poll done my home theater magazine all he wants, they still won't be able to buy any more HD DVD discs or players.

Are you sure that it was just one person or are you paranoid? Who cares anyways. Just let it go. If you're happy with Blu-ray, isn't that all that matters?

Wow... that red ant is such a moron. Does he honestly think fudging the poll will have any affect on Blu-ray?

I voted a bunch of times anyways... haha.

Let me guess, once he finishes with his compressed HD download, he'd be rather angry to find that he won't get any money for returning it, if that is possible.

I wouldnt let it bother you too much, theres a lot of other polls that people unfairly vote on many times, its happend in the past to Blu ray as well, and look where the format stands now, not like one poll changes the course of whats going on.

Considering the last option isn't even a real world opinion (a "niche" product that the studios are just hoping is going to save their bacon?) it's a very odd poll to begin with.

I voted a few times just to see if I could tell how many votes were being counted, and it looks like (presently) there are only about 1000 votes anyway -- if that truly is (more or less) the number who voted it's statistically insignificant anyway (and since they do allow duplicate votes to be cast it's far lower than that). I mean, I have 10s of thousands of hits a day on my poor site. Looks as if the site is pretty irrelevant in terms of visitors.

Rofl, well looks like you helped get it above 50% though, that was fast....so it may have been one person voting against it before.

he set up a bot to do it. That is the only thing I can think of.
You should tell the magazine and let them know what you observed. You might look bad too for following suit, but it can't hurt, the worse and best thing they can do is void it out and not print it in the magazine.

I don't think Blu-ray is a "niche market" when its growing at a faster rate than DVD already...

I'm surprised the power of Blu-ray.com hasn't got "To replace DVD" into the 90s yet.

The outcome of the poll is irrelevant. I was just amazed of how some individuals still cling to their biases. Anyways, some of our guys did a number on the poll.

Don't let it bug ya. Sounds like some teenager who's got nothing better to do than try to skew the results of a poll. Probably bragging to all his other buddies that he's doing it too...

Reminds me of a couple of HD-DED dopes over at Engadget that spew crap about BD all the time. The sad thing is that people care what they think and actually respond to their rants. Someone should tell them just to leave the room and lets the adults talk. HD-DED is dead and will not be resurrected. No number of polls will make it so.
