Default help with onkyo and ps3

I am going nuts with this. I hope someone can help me. Im have PS3 hooked up to a onkyo 605 with a HDMI 1.3 cable. I have changed the audio settings on the PS3 some many times. I think I used every possible combination there is. bitstrem , pcm, all the 7.1 on , all the 7.1 off, some on some off ....... bla bla bla . I still cant get it to play a BluRay in 7.1(Shoot em Up is a 7.1 disk) I can only get it to play in 5.1. I know that it is a very easy fix but i cant seem to get it to work. any help would be grate. Thank you Danny

I believe that I've read that it is a quirk with shoot em up and ps3...it will only put it out in 5.1 for some reason. Try a search and I bet it will come up

some of Lionsgate releases used a non-standard encoding which the PS3 cannot handle...

Make sure your PS3 is outputing all available audio formats in LPCM through HDMI. Then make sure your 605 is configured for a 7.1 speaker setup (assume you've got all speakers connected and have run Audessey?). If, after that, you still don't get 7.1 sound (it will only show as LPCM on the 605 display), then it's probably the Lionsgate encoding that is mentioned above.

Ricshoe

I still have not had any luck getting this to work right.
1 used a new movie "3:10 to Yuma".
2 set all the ps3 output settings to ON
Now here is the problem--- By setting all the output settings to ON the Onkyo seems to lock the listening mode to only MULTI CH OR DIRECT. Even if I'm watching a regular movie or just playing a game. If I play 3:10 to Yuma with my settings this way the display reads 7.1 but to tell you the truth it sounds like sh*t. I cant change the listening mode I can only get MULTI CH or DIRECT.
If I turn OFF the 7.1 output settings on the PS3 I can then change the listening mode and get much better sound but then cant get 7.1 to play. I know that i must be doing something wrong. i just don't know what.
I hope you can help
Danny

If you have the PS3 set to Linear PCM, the Onkyo should read MULTI CH as your reciever is taking the PCM signal from your player. I know this is silly and you most likely have done this from the start, but did you select the uncompressed audio track on the disk "3:10 to Yuma" from the setup or language menu?

I did select uncompressed
So i don't understand My Onkyo comes with 32 different listening modes but i cant use any of them with my PS3. It has Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio (developed for Blu-ray) just to name a few. But i can only listen to multi channel. I don't think that makes sense.

In regards to the codecs you mentioned above, that is actually correct. The PS3 decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA internally and sends them out as PCM to your receiver. That is why your receiver only says MULTI CH; the PS3 decodes them, not your receiver. Also, that means that you have your PS3 set to Linear PCM, which is set correctly as it won't bitstream the HD audio codecs due to hardware constraints. However, it is the same sound whether your PS3 decodes it or the receiver.

I attached a couple links that should help you a bit more than I can, the veterans explain the PS3 to receiver link better than myself.

Audio and the PS3

Player decoding or Receiver decoding, that is the question

Hope these help!
