Default Buying a new receiver and knowing if its really new....

So one of my buddies is a little OCD of sorts and he recently bought a receiver from CC; not sure if it was the website or store. The box appeared to be factory taped sealed and uncompromised when he opened it but the packaging inside is driving him a little nutz. I have heard many people on here and other forums say that its really hard to tell sometimes between a product that is brand new vs. refurb vs. something that was returned and carefully repacked.

But my question is especially on some of the heavier receivers 30 lbs+ because of how they could be handled -- when buying these brand new should they come out of the box sparkling minty fresh scuff free or are scuffs and scratches and marks going to be on them regardless and just simply part of the manufacturing process??

should be scuff free. but honestly, unless it's very noticeable etc... I don't think a few smudges would bother me.

My friend returned his faulty copy of COD4 at CC and they gave him another copy that was supposed to be brand new. It had fingerprints and scratches all over it. I told him to return it immediately and laughed at him. Looks like somebody was using it before it was sold.

there is a chance that it is brand new (has never been sold) but at some point was opened by an employee, perhaps to show it to a customer before it was on display, and then carefully repacked without ever being used or abused
