Default Do I really need a optical digital cord?

I own a 50" samsung HPT-5064 plasma, sony STR-k990 5.1 a/v receiver, samsung BD-p1500 blu-ray player, and a samsung DVD-ar650 DVR. I'm trying to hook it all up to my receiver. Do I really need a digitial optical cord?

Please look at my Sony STR-k990 setup manual.

Hard to tell from the manual. I don't know if it accepts PCM input or not over HDMI. Try it and see is the best suggestion by just plugging in the HDMI

If you use HDMI from your Blu-ray player to your reciever, you will only get audio from the TV (it's HDMI Pass-through). You need to use an optical cable so you'll get lossy DD and DTS from it.
