Hi, im new to this and i need help setting up my home theater for bluray(PS3). So when i plug in my HDMI into my LCD flatscreen, the PQ is great but when i try to use my optical audio plug from my PS3 into my pioneer reciever, no sound comes out. But it works when i use RCA cords and i don't want to use those. Does anyone know why my 7.1 speaker sound does not work? Am i not supposed to use HDMI and optical at the same time? Can anyone help me with this situation with easy explanations? thanks!

first, what receiver are you using?
second, there's a little setup tool in the audio settings of the ps3, where it will give you choices how your connecting.(HDMI/Optical) If your receiver supports hdmi audio input i'd go that route. |

The receiver im using is VSX-D5095 Pioneer. I've switched to optical on the ps3 menu and the sound doesn't work either. Sadly, my receiver doesn't seem to have HDMI ports ![]() Last edited by dj02bothell; 06-25-2008 at 10:47 PM. |

lol! Y'all are useless!!
I registered here just to help this post, since I have a pioneer VSX-D5095 and was having this same exact problem except with a blu-ray player. My friend and I took about an hour but we eventually figured it out. There are a couple things that are important... this receiver only likes Dolby Digital. Make sure that all your output settings are for Dolby Digital (not downmix PCM or any other such nonsense). I also had to set "Optical/coax" as the primary audio output and NOT the HDMI (this is on my sony Blu-Ray). Now, turn the receiver on. Hit the "rcv" button on the remote. Press the right arrow on the keypad (arrows around the "enter" button) until you see "Opt 1 - CDR" (it may have a different source selected on your receiver). Now hit up and down on the arrows to choose which source is tied to Optical Input 1. Also do the same for Optical Input 2 (if you'd like). DVD/LD is the source we used. (Now when you use DVD/LD it will look at optical 1 for audio) Now, change the reciever over to DVD/LD - if it says "DVD 5.1 CH" that means it is looking at the analog inputs for the 5.1 surround - you don't want that. Hit the DVD/LD button again on the front of the reciever to change it back to digital. If all your output settings on your device are set to Dolby Digital you should see an extra "Digital" pop up underneath the existing "Digital" with the dolby icon next to it. Now hit the "DTS" button on the front of the receiver until you see the "Digitial" in the red box with the dolby icon lit up on the top of the display. Wire up and you're good to go! I hope this at least helps a random passerby ![]() (Oh! I also bought some random Terk HDMI 3 source switcher to put back into the equipment area and switch my HDMI sources) |

Nice of you to join to help out the OP
![]() The problem did sound funny, if you'll excuse the pun ![]() I use Optical with my PS3 atm until I have a HDMI amplifer; but it seems the Yamaha's are a little less fussy than your current amp. I just told the PS3 to output over optical, then went to my input settings on the amp and assigned optical 1 to the DVR channel (where my PS3 sits). Good luck! |

Pioneer needs to activate or assign these digital inputs through the on screen menu or setup.
