Default Hd-dvd Is Winning By 4% In Standalone Players

With these numbers it would appear HD-DVD is winning the format war. 52% of HD-DVD standalones sold and 48% of BLU-RAY players sold. BLU-RAY is catching up very fast to HD-DVD. In a few more weeks most likely there will be more BLU-RAY standalone players sold then HD-DVD. If these numbers would have included the PLAYSTATION 3 then the numbers would be more like 90% BLU-RAY to 10% HD-DVD.

I'm a BD buyer and I'm not included in that because I use a PS3 as I'm sure all the other people who even have a fleeting interest in games and want a BD player would use. It's the most future-proof BD player out there AND it's the cheapest.

Blu-ray is catching up. They're not far behind (unlike four-five months ago).

Btw, do they count Blu-ray recorder devices (the ones sold in Japan) in the stand-alone player category or are these separate from the said list.

These are US standalone players only. Computer BLU-RAY and HD-DVD drives are not counted in the number. Videogame systems are not counted either.

If someone posts it, place on the top that HD-DVD is winning. Everyone will want to read it and then they will be upset that BLU-RAY is only 4% behind.

Per the article, it does not include the xbox 360 add-on... if it did, that would make a 0.5% difference.

But if they included PS3 sales... oy... 90%+ in blu-ray's favor?

Interesting to note they say that BD players are more expensive and are still catching up in sales... but they fail to mention the one thing I think makes a difference... CONTENT.

At this rate, within this year, BD should be the dominant format with full studio support ... in a perfect world at least.

It is good to see that standalone numbers are actually so close between the formats in reality. I fear that I had been convinced to a degree to think otherwise - if lies were prevalent enough, one might start to believe. I am not surprised that even people here are surprised to see the numbers.

One of the few arguments left for HD DVD these days is player prices. However (we should congratulate humanity), there are people like us who can appreciate more than the one-dimensional nature of "el cheapo". Testament to this, blu-ray are able to sell a similar number of players at twice the price of their competition. I couldn't have imagined.

Toshiba is probably not oblivious to this data. Perhaps they have severely underpriced for the early adopter stage of the market.

Don't forget the late launch dates of the Sony and Pioneer stand alone units. Now that they are out there, among Samsung, Panasonic and LG in FULL production, it's simply a matter of time

Ignoring the impact of videogame systems in the format war is like ignoring tactical nukes because they are "unconvental" They may not be counted, but they sure as hell count.

What sample is that based on, just the US, North America, or more? In Australia it's 100% Blu-ray purchases 0% HD-DVD, yes some people are importing HD-DVD from the US as HD-DVD is sooo much better - yes they believe each others FUD. Although only a small number - you can't count one purchase twice (well HD-DVD group manage to count things that suit them 2 or 3 times), so if they were purchased from the US somehow - that is NOT a purchase in Oz. Mind you the price that is being asked for the Blu-ray players they will NOT be selling well either.

If you read that article, it covers from April to December of last year. HD-DVD was out there by itself from April to around June or so and then of course we had the 2-3 month stumblin' and bumblin' out of the gate by BD so that basically gave HD-DVD almost 6 months unchecked...and being "about even" with BD is all they have to show for it even at that?

^^ BD is catching up alright!

HD DVD is reaching the end of its time.

Once BD-J is finalized by the end of this summer you'll start to see more of the big guns titles being released, which is what Fox and Disney are waiting for.

Note that this is to the end of 2006, before the BD studios announced a flood at CES, Warner announced a plan to catchup, and Universal went silent!

Can you imagine what the sales have been like since?!
