I've seen the movie numerous times, so I don't care for a review about that...
What I want to know is how well the transfer is. If it is top-notch HD. Also, I noticed this is an "uncut" version. So there are extra scenes? Also, I was wondering if there are any good extras on the Blu-ray. Thanks. |

HD Digest only gave it 2.5 stars and Home Theater Spot has not reviewed it yet. The reviewer at HD Digest can be a bit suspect so if you want it , rent it first for a look and if you like it , get it.

The score was a typo, it's actually 3.5 stars. Personally, I don't mind a few speckles of dirt on a print as long as the detail is there and Bracke states that it has good detail.

As far as film artifacts go (there were a lot in TFE, not so much in AP) it is about the quickest thing I could think of. Since I wrote that post, someone mentioned Rocky as a good comparison as far as artifacts. That might be better.

American Psycho looks killer... I'm so happy it's on Blu-ray, it's my favorite movie.

Well, I just popped in American Psycho on Blu-ray, and so far it isn't anything special.
There is tons of noticeable dirt on numerous frames of the film. Which is pretty bad on the brighter scenes (which is the majority of the movie). They definitely didn't spend ANY time cleaning up the frames. The opening credits are pretty shaky (almost looks like the camera was being hand-held while filming the words). And so far (within the first 10 minutes) the film looks "old". The color reproduction looks like a film from the 80s or so. I'm not sure if this was done on purpose, or if the original film used for the transfer just want all that good. There is also a pretty noticable flicker in most of the lighter scenes. I'm not sure if this is a result of the PS3, the frames per second, the compression, or simply a result of the frames of the film. There is definitely some nice scenes that makes the image really pop. Maybe they'll come out with a cleaner release in the future, but I'm a big fan of this movie, and this release will definitely hold me over until then. EDIT: upon further investigation, I compared my DVDrip from my computer, to the Blu-ray movie. And both use the exact same film, right down to the placement of the dirt on each frame. I guess they dont have a better piece of film laying around? Last edited by Garconis; 02-07-2007 at 10:33 PM. Reason: added info |

I watched it last night, and my guess is that the "old" look was intentional. I watched some of the deleted scenes after the film and the actors were commenting on how the director went to great lengths to make the film look like the 80's.
Overall I would agree with the 3.5/5 rating mentioned. Not the best, but pretty good for a low budget film. A better transfer than The Fifth Element for sure. I haven't seen the BD version of Rocky to compare it with. |

I enjoyed the film. I think the transfer was very good. The sharpness and clarity of the skyrises at night are fantastic. The beauty of the World Trade Center buildings alone makes this a valuable piece of film.
I look at the night scenes. If you see something like Full Metal Jacket and compare it to this film you will appreciate this film's transfer more. I could see very little if any grain. The blacks stayed black. There are sharper films but this one has nothing to be ashamed about. The main character on the other hand...I kept saying to myself no don't do that and I hated the guy. Love the film, the transfer and would recommend it. |
