Default Sony BDPS300B vs Samsung BDP1500

Hi guys. Just signed up today, excellent easy to use forum you've got going here

I'm trying to decide which blue-ray player to go for and the Sony BDPS300B and Samsung BDP1500 are the only ones in my price range. Now i've been reading about them all morning and have read that the Sony unit takes a loooong time to boot up and open the drive, then some movies take a while to play, sometimes up to 2mins to get going. However, I haven't found any information on the Samsung units loading times and problems like these, only good reviews of this unit.

If someone could point me in the direction of the best player out of the 2 it would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been lazy and just looking for an easy/lazy answer of people here, i've tried to look myself but don't know enough about the format yet to understand the differences and features. I'm an IT administrator so i'm sure i'll pick it up with a bit of guidance.

Thanks,
Luke

This post on the 1500 had me scared. I would look into the BDP-S350, it is suppossed to be much better on the load times. I have the S300 and load times can be long, that doesn't bother me as much as the lack of all the HD audio formats.

I agree with Crackin.I have had the S300 from day one slow but good player.I am waiting to upgrade to S350 right now.

I suggest going with the s350 for 399.99 one of the newest players with all the latest features.

If you are looking at a Sony, look at the 350 not the 300.

Don't listen to a few who don't know about the 1500, the 1500 is a very solid performer, I have one, and it has worked without a flaw.

Thats the answer I was looking for! Out of interest, what are the loading times for the 1500?

For the people who said get the new Sony one, it really is out of my budget and I believe that this £200 Samsung 1500 can do just as good a job but with a slight load delay to start with. Once loaded, things are all good.

To me, as long as i'm getting the same quality of high definition, crisp viewing i'm not bothered about a slight wait. You've got to get yourself comfy and get the beers/snacks out anyway

I'm betting the difference between the 1500 and the more expensive units can only been seen by scientists with special equipment or by doing side-by-side comparrisons which don't apply to home use anyway.

The Sony 350 and the Samsung 1500 should be selling for close to the same price, $399.99 (US)
The Samsung is currently on display in my store and is a solid prefromer.
Very good PQ and bitstream audio for all formats.
The Sony, (soon to be available) is proported to have the same features plus the ability to upgrade to a 2.0 player with a firmware change..

I just checked your spin up time: From "power OFF" to when I could select play on the menu 50 seconds.....
I had the disk in the player, and hit the play button to power it up.
With no disk in the machine it took 35 seconds to get the door to open so a disk could be inserted then 40 seconds to reach the same menu spot.

the only gripe I would see with the Sammy 1500 would be that HDMI is 5.1 only. If you only have a 5.1 setup this will not be a problem.

I'll just be using the built in speakers from my LG HD TV for sound to be honest.

So what is all this profile stuff about then? I've read that the new Sony S350 unit can be updated to profile 2 firmware but what extra functionality does this exactly offer? If someone could give me a detailed description of the differences between 1.0 1.1 and 2.0 that would be great.

I completely agree.

when the idea of firmware updates first evolved, people were like "I don't want to have to keep updating my equipment, this is stupid!"

but the simple idea behind it is to make the equipment better.

Good post. I would like to add that the 1500 is also BD live "ready" and is rumored to be upgradedable to 2.0.

IMO it will probably be splitting hairs comparing the 350 to the 1500 because of the almost identical feature set and price. It may come down to which name you actually like better. The only differences seem to be things like discrete IR codes, and the ability to pass 480i via HDMI. (the Sony holds the advantage in both instances FYI) I don't really think those 2 things are going to be an issue for you though.

I don't think this is correct, either way I will test in about 2 weeks when I get my theater finished in the basement.

Where have you read that it will not bitstream 7.1 audio?

Yeah, I am sure that is wrong but can't quite prove it yet.

It only has 2.0 analog, so I am not sure what the confusion is. I will drop a line into the AVS owner's thread and report back for those that care.

WOW, when I clicked on that link it scared me!!! That wasnt my intention, but some of the players are issue ridden, but maybe good fw updates will help! I dont really think player issues are just a samsung thing, at least I hope not. I do know that my 1400 needs serviced and its 9 months old. Maybe I was insane to buy another samsung product.

I think everyone pretty much covered it now.

I'm going to go ahead and agree with several posts that are suggesting you stick with newer model sonys. My reason for this is since Blu-Ray is still pretty new, I believe the company who created it will put out the best hardware for the format...for now.

Good luck and enjoy,
