Default Center speaker: Klipsch RC-10, Polk CS2BK, or ?

I am looking for a decent center channel speaker to update the center in my current Energy Take 5 setup. I have an Onkyo 805 receiver.

Space is an issue, but I also like good quality. I am currently considering the Klipsch RC-10 (perfect size at 5.4" H x 16" W x 9.1" D) or the slightly larger Polk CS2BK. My budget is around $200 to $300.

Before I buy the Klipsch, I am just seeking some advice on what you would get given the above limitations.

if they aren't timbre matched its not gonna make much difference... either way it will sound off. I would wait til you have the money to buy a full front set (L,C,R)

Price is really not as much of a concern as space is. The Energy speakers are ceiling/wall mounted and are compact in design. I don't have the room for floor standing speakers right now, but will in the future. If I were to get front right and left speakers, they'd have to be compact size. By getting a better center I was thinking of a short term gain with long term upgradeability.

well... the best way I've heard it explained was actually by a klipsch rep. he basically put it that if you mix and match speaker styles/brands/models you can have a scene in a movie where a fighter jet goes from a jet, to a cesna and back to a jet... timbre matching is very important and although the center may be an upgrade, it will sound out of place until you do get matching speakers for it...

my advice: save the money you would be spending and buy some blu rays or something, upgrade later when you can upgrade the full setup

Thanks. Based on further research and your advice, I am going to wait until after my next move before I upgrade my speakers. That way I can get a matching set and purchase according to what will best fit the new room setup.

I had the same problem choosing a center speaker for my Klipsch cornerhorns.A speaker that would match perfectly the rest of my system simply wouldn't fit the allocated area. Although it isn't the perfect match it at least will fit in the area I have available and it's efficient enough to nearly keep up with the K-Horn surrounds. Good luck!
