If I put one of the linux operating systems on my PS3, could I then use the PS3 as an external scaler ( I think that's the term I'm looking for) to vertically stretch the image of a BD to use with a projector and a lens?

Given the lack of responses, I'll try to give you at least something to go on.
First, your question is really vague.. 'with a projector and lens'? Anyhow, you can install Linux on the PS3 and whatever software you want.. so I'm sure that if you find the right software, you could use it as a scaler and pass it out to whatever HDCP-compliant device you want - if the software itself is HDCP-compliant. Given the open source nature of Linux, you may be able to find something 'close enough' and modify it to suit your needs. The PS3 has very little memory and minimal processing power so unless linux has access to the PS3's scaler and your needs don't exceed its capability, it's going to be very slow. /shrug But what gets me, more than anything, is why you would need/want to vertically stretch an image in the first place. Projectors already throw a 1080p source onto a 100"+ diagonal in the correct aspect ratio. If you stretch vertically (for a full screen display?) your video will look horribly distorted. If you want a better answer, from anybody, I think you're going to have to be a little more clear in your question. |

Hey,
Though I haven't put linux on my on PS3,.. I've read that linux on the PS3 works about as well as linux on a Pentium II 500 Mhz PC. In other words... it's not worth doing. Now,.. depending on what you want from a HTPC the PS3 can still be a great solution. It is a great Blu Ray, Upconverting DVD, Upconverting CD, SACD, MP3, MP4 player and Jpeg slideshow viewer. Also,.. it's got internet capabilities. It can stream media from your network and I believe plans to have the PS Store be a movie rental place have been in the works. -Brian |

I have had Linux on my PS3 almost since day one that Linux was available...but have not used it much since.
Everything I read or knew was that Linux is not capable of even using BD aspect of the PS3. I could be wrong, but the simple answer to your question is no. (unless your a computer wiz who knows how to program Linux and backdoor kinda stuff) |
