Default HELP: Black Bars on the Sides

I bought a Harmony 550 remote today and programmed my Samsung LCD (LNT4665F) and all of a sudden I have black bars on a lot of the channels i watch (showtime channels and non-hd network channels). HD network channels are without bars though. How can I get rid of these bars?!?

There should be a setting for stretching the picture, probably labeled as picture mode or something like that. If you stretch it, though, everything's going to look distorted.

Edit: I have the 550 also . . . hit Devices, then hit the right arrow under the screen until you see Aspect, and hit that until you achieve the desired result.

For me my picture button changes it from standard to movie and so on. Anyway to adjust the ratio my button is marked screen. Might be for yours too.

Those black bars are normal. Your non-HD channels are broadcasting in 4:3 so watch them in 4:3. Don't distort them by stretching them to fit your screen.

I think your problem can be simply answered by the words Aspect Ratio. I'm assuming you have a new HDTV set, which are built at an aspect ratio known as 16:9, which measures out at 1.78:1 (meaning the image is 1.78 times wider than it is tall), while SDTV sets are what's known as 4:3, or 1.33:1. Now, most HD channels broadcast at the newer 16:9/ 1.78:1 aspect ratio, while the SD channels come at the old 4:3/ 1.33:1 aspect. So, basically you got a box that measures 1.33:1 in a 1.78:1 rectangle screen. You're TV should have a setting that can change it so the SD signals are stretched out over the HD display, but I personally don't like it, and depending on you TV and connections and such could actually cause some serious problems down the road.

Sorry, I'm OAR all the way. I had to teach my fiance about OAR when we moved in together and she's cool with it now. No need to distort an already crappy image and make it look even worse.

hey, if I put in a 4:3 dvd to play on my 16x9 TV, then I have no business operating heavy machinery!

...thats why all my standard definition dvd's are widescreen and always played at correct aspect ratio.

But watching normal TV? I care not if I watch 4:3 standard definition "Survivor" stretched to fit my screen!
