Default Coming out or not??

So, is this BR going to be sold or what? I've read its announcement in April for its Japan release, and statemjents about a fall 2003 USA release and
a spring 2004 EU release... Now I see Philips and Pioneer showing their new dual-layer DVD9 technology.
What's going on? Blue-Ray or DVD9?
This "official" site is definitely a shame in mass-media communication...

First of all, this is not the official Blu-ray site. The official Blu-ray site is: http://www.blu-raydisc.info/

However, as you can see that site is mostly for licenses and technical stuff.

According to this article: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,113076,00.asp
Blu-ray will be launched this month (November).

I'm not sure which new dvd format you mean, but if you mean edvd (enhanced dvd) it is a big disappointment and will most likely not become a standard. Right now it looks like Blu-ray will become the new standard, but only time can tell. When Blu-ray is launched, this site will get a total makeover with new design, news, information and help.

Don't hold off on buying a DVD-recorder because of rumors about Blu-ray recorders being available soon. I've never heard about any US or European release dates mentioned by any company developing Blu-ray disc recorders yet. The predictions made in news articles are to my knowledge just speculation by the writers. If I were to come across a direct quote by a reliable source I would definitely post about it on the site. DVD-recorders have come down in price a lot lately and you can get a fast DVD-recorder at a very affordable price. I don't think you can go wrong with buying a DVD-recorder as both the recorder and the media is cheap.

As for the version of Blu-ray covered in that news article linked by Iceman, it is a special version of Blu-ray primarily targetted as a backup storage media to replace the MO (Magnetic-Optical) disc format that is currently used by most companies for backuping up data. It's a step in the right direction, but don't expect consumer products any time soon. It will probably still be quite a while before there are any Blu-ray disc recorders released outside of Japan at an affordable price.

The 'Enhanced DVD' format has already been agreed upon by the 216 members of the DVD forum, so expect these DVD-players to start appearing sometime next year. To most movie-enthusiasts the format is a huge disappointment and definitely not worth upgrading for. The DVD forum has decided to hold off on HD-DVD (blue-laser or better video compression) for a few more years and the only new feature is support for DVD-players to connect to the Internet in order to view/access extra materials stored online. This will free up some space on the DVD that can be used to improve the quality of the movie, but this is a very minor quality improvement. The real reason for the change is about control and with DVD-players connecting to the Internet the industry can keep statistics on what people are watching and when they are watching it. The disc will be used as an entry pass to view the extra materials that are stored online, but in the future this might include the movie aswell. The scary thing is that this might be used as a way to control what people can do with their own movies (similar to the Circuit City DIVX format that required a phone connection to view movies). Imagine not being able to watch movies that you own without having your DVD-player connected to the Internet. Lets just hope they don't go that far.

Had me worried for a moment. Thought Blu-Ray would never come.

These necro-bumped threads confuse me for awhile until I finally look at the dates.

X-Ninja, that's why it's great. Sometimes the little guy does a better job.

For example: In October when San Diego (most of Southern California actually) was in flames, tons of evacuees(sp?) were taken care of at Qualcomm Stadium. Sure, the politicians showed up for speeches and photos but the relief efforts at Qualcomm had nothing to do with the government. They took credit for the positive example San Diego set for the nation in times of disaster, compared to areas hit by Hurricane Katrina. In reality, it worked so well because San Diegans didn't wait days for FEMA and Red Cross to arrange shelter, food, and other supplies. The Qualcomm evacuation site, like many others, were run by individual volunteers, and sustained by donations from private businesses and private citizens. It was over a week before FEMA showed up at all.

I digress...My point is: some things function better, and with more care, when they're privately run. Although this site has an obvious preference for Blu-ray above other formats, it's not exclusively loyal to Sony, Best Buy, Disney, Samsung, Warner or Wal-Mart. (Maybe a little Amazon, but I'm not sure to what extent...but it's not like we can't talk about other retailers.) This isn't the BDA's site, it's ours! (Okay, it's more Iceman's, Josh's, Marwin's, WickyWoo's, etc., but you know what I mean! It's for the people!)
