Default Warner Takes Aim At David Goyer's SUPER MAX (Green Arrow movie)

Supermax news

Warner Brothers apparently liked writer/director David S. Goyer's script for the Green Arrow feature Super Max enough to put the proposed film in motion.

"Green Arrow seems to be one of the characters in the wake of this phenomenal summer book-ended by Iron Man and The Dark Knight," Goyer told Sci Fi Wire's PATRICK LEE at San Diego's Comic-Con International over the weekend.

In the draft of Super Max that Goyer (The Dark Knight) submitted to Warner, Green Arrow finds himself framed, stripped of his identity and imprisoned in a high-security penitentiary for supervillains, with whom he must team up to clear his name and escape. But, ironically, the story that writer Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) originally proposed for the film (which has come to be called by some Green Arrow: Escape from Supermax) wasn't earmarked for the bow-slinging DC hero.

"It started out as a supervillain-escape idea, and the idea was, well, we can either go Marvel or DC," said Goyer. "And I talked to both of them, and I kind of said, 'Well, who can you give me?' Because I needed a superhero that I can bounce off of. And I don't know. For my money it was, if we went Marvel, it would be Captain America. If we went DC, maybe Green Arrow. And Green Arrow seemed like the best fit."

The non-powered costumed character also fits into the current trend of spotlighting second-tier comic heroes that the recent Iron Man proved to be so lucrative. Warner's eagerness to green-light (no pun intended) Super Max obviously stems, at least in part, from this.

"Green Arrow is, you know, probably on the same level as Iron Man," Goyer said. "And, yeah, I mean when a movie like Iron Man does $300 million, and DC, Warner Brothers, realizes, 'Wow, we've got 20 of these kinds of characters.

I don't know much about Green Arrow at all. Ofcourse I knew nothing about Iron Man either and that turned out to be one of my favorite movies.

I'm surprised that with all the DC fan's none of them are excited for this. They're planning on a ton of characters in this movie (as well as a Joker Easter Egg).

i would rather have a straight out Green Arrow movie, this just seems like a movie that they needed a hero for and stuck in Green Arrow, it could have been anybody. I just dont think this is going to do the character justice and Green arrow is too good a character to just throw out because David Goyer had an idea and needed characters so he just started sticking people in.

A good story to introduce Green Arrow to people that doesn't know about him would be the Quiver storyline that Kevin Smith wrote for DC Comics awhile back.In that story you get a good history of the character past, present and future.

But don't you guys see? This is a way for DC to tie in it's characters in one movie. And if it does well, what would the sequel be? Yes, a Green Arrow stand alone movie.

all that this will be tying in is Green Arrow, without a backstory it seems and if he's in a prison one would guess he would be without his costume and bow....might as well make it anybody then

and

a bunch of second and third rate villians like Mirrormaster, boomerang, trickster
or puzzler.

and why would they make a film and then do a sequel with the hero of the first films origin...

so far i'm not on board. i would rather see a Green Arrow movie or Green Arrow / Green Lantern.

It starts with GA getting framed (he's in costume and has his bow when he's caught). You have a narrow view if you don't get excited for this. Heck, send it over to Marvel and do it with Hawkeye. If it's done right, there will be more good movies. That's what it's all about.

It's already been said that they were going to have villains from most of the hero's books. Even the mention of another hero in a movie starts to bring credibility to a shared universe (see Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk).

Hollywood 101: Movie makes bank, make a sequel to continue the adventures of said successful character. This is probably your best chance at a Green Arrow movie (stand alone) in the future.

Thumbs up Update: Justin Marks talks Supermax

Source

This is an ambitious project mainly because it has the makings for being the ultimate crossover film. This film was loaded with all sorts of treats for comic geeks everywhere!

Quote:
His secret identity is Oliver Queen, billionaire activist of the fictional Star City. Dressed like Robin Hood, Green Arrow is an archer, who invents arrows with various special functions, such as a glue arrow, a net arrow, or a boxing-glove arrow. The script borrows from both the original origin and from Andy Diggle and Jock's recent Green Arrow: Year One.

Now according to Justin Marks’ interview and what we saw in the script, the real star of this film will be the prison itself.

"It's a very, very awesome prison. I majored in architecture in college, and design is how I actually started in. For 'Super Max,' designing that prison, it had to be the kind of thing that was a character in and of itself," Marks said. "We're in a world where instead of just trying to contain a guy who's really big, you're trying to contain a guy who can — in the case of Icicle — who can freeze things.

This worked before in the Shawshank Redemption where the actual prison had all the charisma and menacing charm, while the characters were actually an after thought to the story.

As Mark’s puts it, "to escape from Super Max they have got to go through the most elaborate heist we've ever seen, involving superpowers. Because the prison itself kind of has superpowers!"

As stated in our script review, "the prison changes shape, cells rearrange, and reconfigure every night to disorient the prisoners from breaking out. A transforming super prison!"

I for one cant wait to see this one when it finally gets the “green” light (sorry I had to do that), and I’m more interested now than ever before in Green Arrow. I think it’s because of the cool factor that Marks talks about.

"I see him as the Jason Bourne of superheroes, a guy who exists with his own sort of set of tricks. And I think the difference between Ollie Queen and a guy like Bruce Wayne — they're both rich. They both have their things. But Batman is about his equipment and is about his theatricality and about his detective skills. And Green Arrow is a guy who's really just the sort of MacGyver type," Marks said. "In his hand, anything can be a weapon."

Interesting to note, there was talk about the possibility of Jason Bourne playing the role of Green Arrow, as stated in the story Latino Review did.

“I heard a rumor somewhere that Matt Damon was in negotiations to star as Ollie Queen/Green Arrow. He certainly has the physicality and chops for the meaty role considering how bad ass Damon was in the last Bourne film”

I have strong suspicions that this movie will only have a marginal connection to the DC universe. Take out the main superhero character and the script could really be any standard tough action hero. Since it is set in prison there will be no recognizable costumes for most of the movie. This story idea has been floating around for years. I hope it turns out well but I'm expecting something along the lines of the Punisher movie which didn't turn out very good.

that made me shudder....i still have no faith in this film

those are two main reasons why this will not do well.

Probably because most DC Fans are not sure about this movie, I'll wait until we start seeing trailers before I decided if this one will be good or not. But it doesn't really sound to promising.

I would have preferred an origin movie then maybe towards the end of the movie have him frame to set up this one.
