Default SCEE: Home focused on games, not social networking

http://www.qj.net/SCEE-Home-focused-.../49/aid/122750

Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Darren Cairns and Liam Wickham are in the forefront of PlayStation Home development. While in a developer conference in Brighton, the two took the chance to clarify a common but wrong notion about Sony's virtual world to come. They say it's not a social networking site, contrary to most assumptions.

"Home is not a social network - it's focused on games. It's a visual representation of the PlayStation community," they said in the conference.

The focus, they say, is on creating a virtual representation of the PS3's online community. More than socialization, Home is geared towards enhancing online play and other facets of PS3 gaming.

One of the most exciting things that SCEE discussed is how Home can be a good way for starting sessions of online play. They talked about the possibility of viewing things like lobbies and match setup screens while inside Home and eventually being able to launch games themselves from within the virtual world.

After a session is concluded, players can be taken back to Home where they can discuss what went on in their respective batches. The devs, however, said that game developers will have to work towards incorporating this feature into their games if their titles are to take advantage of it.

Cairns and Wickham detailed methods in which XML files and Lua coding will be useful in making this work. SCEE said the closed beta will be expanding as we go along, while the open one is on track for launch this year. We'll give you more Home news as updates arrive.

2nd to last paragraph is where this goes to sh1t.

very few people are going to sit down on a virtual couch and discuss what just occured in the game.

the thing about devs must incorporate the featrue into the game also has me worried that lazy devs won't. Sony, if you havn't figured this out yet, MAKE IT MANDATORY FOR THEM TO INCLUDE THE FEATURE!!!

Im not sure if Sony knows what it wants Home to be. Ive heard everything from this massive online marketplace where people can show off products, to an entertainment city full of mini-games and movie theaters, to just another gaming app, to social networking.

hopefully, most of us are wrong and this won't fall on its face.

Home sounds a whole lot less interesting to me after reading that. Like you said, who is gonna sit in a virtual world after a match and talk about it? We can already do that here on forums or even after the game if your doing a party type thing and after a match the leader leaves the game everybody is back in the lobby as one unit, like in COD4. I knew it was gonna be focused on games, but after saying it's gonna be a social networking thing it's got me feeling kinda iffy. I guess we'll see when it's finally rolled out.

Not interesting? Maybe not to you, but this would be a -very- sought after feature for clans (shooters) and guilds (MMOs).
You might consider that the online portion of a game is -find a match, get in, play, get out, turn off PS3.
This is true for many people, but many other people would like something a little more fulfilling.

I don't think they want to stain developer relations much more. That CAN result in lost titles.

People talk about how they "whooped" @ss in the game or why they got their @sses whooped all the time. This time it can be with audio while on a couch (or standing up...whatever) and not typing on forums. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I'm just seeing difference descriptions of the same thing. The features in Home mean different things to different people. All of those descriptions are just people saying what Home means to them. For some, it's just another gaming app. For others, it's an entertainment city full of mini-games and movie theaters.

For Home, it's up to the people just as much as it is up to the app to be successful. If people aren't being social, you can't have SOCIAL networking. Therefore, that aspect of it will fail. It's that simple. It's up to us. Sony can only lay the ground work.

This is the first and only description of Home that I have ever seen like this. 1000 to 1. I will go with the 1000 other descriptions.

Just to clarify, I don't see how the gaming side of Home would detract from the social aspect of it, they are complimentary imo

more home news...

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/31/...ficant-rehaul/

Looks like the Japanese release of the Home beta was really a sign of things to come. Current users of PlayStation Home are being sent e-mails about the availability of a brand new Home client. It's so new, in fact, that users will have to delete the old beta off their hard drives entirely and start with a brand new installation. A test run encourages all Home users to log in tonight to join the ever-growing community.

See the e-mail, after the cut.

[Thanks, P.!]
"We are now moving into the next phase of PlayStation®Home's evolution and as a current tester we'd like you to continue your participation.

Your existing installation of the original PlayStation®Home Beta will no longer work and you should delete that by selecting it and pressing [TRIANGLE] and then choosing [Delete]. Please remember to delete your save data for it too. You will find that under [Saved Data Utility] in the [Game] section of your XMB."

But, still...what? Why would it be sad? Is it sad when simple games like Pixel Junk Eden to come out before games like Killzone 2? It's about the situation as this Mii/dashboard vs. Home stuff.

Oh boy....what i mean is sony needs to hurry the hell up at release home already,IMO its going to crush xbox live and make it look crap compaired to home.
We alreay have MS copying one of its features wich is having your own character, they knew home is light years beyond live and its better than having just a name and a 2d interface. ( wich they still do have)
So to me it would be sad for them to announce something new( that they copied) and release it before home. how many times is this going happend? it happend with ingame chat, sony showed that and ingame video before xbox even came out( i think) and that video service? oh please sony was suppose to have that out durring the ps2 generation but broadband wasn't really there yet. infact they talked about all this stuff back in 1999 to 2000 at the launch of ps2, they had all these ideas first but ALWAYS fail to execute on them first. same thing happend with the ipod, sony was going to come out with something like that but they didn't do it and now look what happend. i dont know the story why they didnt. same story with the wii sony been had the idea of casual gaming and people playing together but sony japan said no no you crazy? Families dont play together and as the great phill harrison said.....then out comes the wii..

A social network- not focused on social networking. Interesting.

If you had only two choices to pick from (1st or best), which would you pick?
