Question Pioneer’s breakthrough (consequences).

With the advent of Pioneer’s breakthrough and the additional layers of memory (appear to be in 25gig increments) do you think that a 75gig or 100gig disc could be developed for longer than normal films such as LoTR extended cut enabling the very best possible picture and sound.

small runs mean more money, unless they actually mass produce 100GB discs it wont happen or it will just up the cost a fair bit.

were also assuming all current players can play a 100GB disc let alone a 500GB one.

I guess we will see in a year or two

It's nice that they work to make 500 GB discs, but they should focus on making 100 GB discs valid for Movies and not just data

It appears that the 500gig disc is compatible. Should be no reason why a 100gig cannot be too. Maybe this will have more applications with PS3 games than actual movies.

Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed at most PS3 games. I feel like they should be better in terms of graphics. MGS4 was a good game I think, but one of the few that utilized the graphics.

I think I'll wait till they get two layers working before I believe this. It has to be fiction.

maybe it will help game developers use the PS3 at 100%, not having to mind about disc size

I would just like 2-4 movies on a single 100 GB disc.
2 disc set - on one disc!

All the talk about higher quality or even uncompressed on the new 500GB BDs... Higher quality, sure! To a point - ever try to run an uncompressed HD video??
I did, once... ~248mbps uncompressed 44 second, 10.3GB(once unpacked) video named factory.avi

http://www.hdgreetings.com/ecard/video-1080p.aspx

WAY SLOW download.
My laptops play blu-rays perfectly! This?
Laptops(obviously) could not play it.
Someone with a monster computer can probably play it, but no way a STB will play it.

We should hope for mulit-movie discs or whole season discs

10.3 gigs at 44 seconds? wow so a 2 hour uncompressed movie must be in the terabytes.

Pretty much!
Read speeds will have to be increased slightly to achieve the 248mbps too...

so thats roughly 1GB/sec.

a movie is about 2 hours, which is 7200 seconds meaning we need 7.2TB on a disc to get a 4k 10 bit frame movie.

Thats doable in 15 years I think (for mass media).
