Default Recommend Some SACDS

So I'll be getting a $50 gift card from best buy in the next week or so (HD-DVD rebate card thing that is finally coming), and I wanted to get a few sacds. I'm picking up Clapton's Slow Hand and Pink Floyd's DSotM, but I was wanting something acoustic, or just something that would sound great. Preferably not jazz, but will gladly take a good classical sacd or anything with a good mix of acoustic guitars. Thanks

Mark Knopfler, Shangri-la. Superb.

or, for classical acoustic guitar, Concerto de Aranjuez, with the Romeros.

Too bad there's no Strunz and Farrah on SACD

If you can change your mind about jazz, you must buy Kind of Blue by Miles Davis:
http://www.amazon.com/Kind-Blue-Mile...8083126&sr=8-1

Also read the posts by other participants at A Guide to SACD for additional recommendations.

Best Buy's selection of SACDs isn't what it used to be a few years ago. I recommend getting some of the Elton John SACDs or the Allman Brothers SACDs if your local Best Buy still has them. Most SACD buyers have resorted to buying off the Internet.

I agree, that would be great. And you know, I still haven't picked up Shangri-La. I think it's time that I do

If you're just into rock, you can't go wrong with the following, although some are two channel only:
Santana--Abraxas
Joe Satriani--Strange, Beautiful Music
Jeff Beck--Blow by Blow
Carol King--Tapestry
Allman Bros--Eat a Peach
Elton John--Tumbleweed Connection
Grant Lee Philips--Mobilize
Beck--Sea Change
Stevie Ray Vaughan--Texas Flood
Earth Wind & Fire--That's the Way of the World

Yeah I can second that Satriani disc, it's beautiful, especially the last track "You Saved My Life" - four different guitar parts.

Also for rock:

Billy Joel - The Stranger
Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
John Mayer - Heavier Things
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Toto - Toto IV
Depeche Mode - Violator
Ryan Adams - Gold
Elton John - ANY OF THEM
The Police - Every Breath You Take (Greatest Hits)
Sting - Brand New Day

All of these are stereo and multi-channel.

Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism is a good stereo-only SACD.

I actually like the two-channel "Engines of Creation" Satriani SACD even more. It has a harder edge all around.

I hadn't considered listening to that one yet - most of the reviews I've read said it wasn't in line with most of Satch's work, too much techno influence.

What was your take on the music itself?

I just saw Satch in Buffalo in October - awesome show. The new song Andalusia (last track off the new album) was awesome, Time Machine and Flying in a Blue Dream really stuck out too.

For me, his style fits in better with techno/industrial rock. There is ballad/lyrical stuff on Engines of Creation but I still prefer the harder tracks. When he goes for a more classic rock feel, as on much of Strange Beautiful Music, Satriani starts to lose me. Compared to pretty much all guitarists of the classic rock era, Satriani is much more of a technician, almost like DiMeola in the jazz world. In both their cases, they showcase huge chops, an incredible sense of timing and phrasing, but for me they lack an emotional aspect to their playing compared to other guitarists who give up a bit of technical force for emotional feel. Even when Satriani is improvising it sounds like he's playing a predetermined line or phrase. But I do love his stuff. My buddy worked for some of his stage hands and got to hang out backstage with him at a couple of his bay area shows. I've never had the opportunity to see him live.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Engines of Creation is what I consider to be a crowning achievement for him, as it more successfully merges the rhythmic style with his lyrical/melodic/technical conception.

I don't agree Big Daddy. Miles Davis is not your mainstream Jazz musician. There is no question that KIND OF BLUE belongs in every Jazz afficionados collection, but for a newcomer it may turn him/her completely off the genre.

I'm not sure about online, but I was told by Best Buy that they cleared out all of their remaining SACD and DVD-Audio disc stock from retailers this year. You might check Bestbuy.com though.

Discs I have that I would highly recommend include:

Keane: Hopes and Fears - Great recording if you can find it
Snow Patrol: Final Straw - fantastic group and disc
John Legend: Get Lifted
Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon - never heard it sound this incredible
Dire Straights: Brothers in Arms
Norah Jones: Come Away With Me - Simply stunning, with great accoustical melodies
Billy Joel: The Stranger - his best work and his best sounding SACD
Elton John: Goodbye Yellowbrick Road Anniversary Set - sounds like vinyl, which is great
Eric Clapton: Slowhand
Oasis: (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Great album, but not the "SACD demo disc"
Sting: Brand New Day

If you're really serious about "a good mix of acoustic guitars", you must get "Friday Night in San Francisco" with DiMeola, McLaughlin and De Lucia. This is in the jazz bins but I think any guitar fan will find this absolutely incredible, especially the first track--a duet with DiMeola and De Lucia.

The trio's second album (a studio recording) is possibly even better, but it's only available from Japan.

Both are two channel.

For those interested in drums, world music, I recommend the excellent Water Lilly recordings such as The Bamboo Flute, available domestically, as well as the Kodo SACDs you'll need to import from Japan. These are also two channel.

There is a Kodo SACD--Mondo Head--that is mutlichannel and I highly recommend that as well.
