Default receiver & speaker setup

So I finally got my wife to give me a time frame for upgrading my Sony 710 to the Sony 920 AVR. I was thinking of staying with the 5.1 set up because I don't have room for 7 speakers the way my house is set up.

So on the back of the receiver, would I plug into the posts for suround speakers or the suround back speakers?

Secondly, as I have been sitting here thinking about this, I think my house is perfect for a 6.1 set up. I could add one speaker off to the right about 4 feet to get over my left shoulder. Would it be ok to use a center channel or would I be better off buying another pair, and just putting one up and the other in the closet? Also, this 6th speaker will go into the suround back post obviously, but is there a preference to whether it is the right or left? (I believe that would be no, but just checking)

When I had my 6.1 speakers installed, I bought a second pair for the rear center. I am in the same situation where 7.1 is just overkill because I'm in a condo so not alot of room. As it is, outside of smoothness of passovers the additional speaker doesn't add overly much. I'm glad to have it as it's great for gaming but, it really isn't a necessity in a small space. Someone else will have to answer about using a center speaker for a rear speaker. I don't know enough about it. I paid a professional to come out and put speakers into the ceiling and pick the speakers out.

As to where you plug your speakers into, the book will tell you which to do. I have a new sony receiver and it specifically shows how to hook it up for the various speaker set ups.

I disagree. I have a condo myself and i have 10.2. Now THAT'S overkill lol. 7.1 isn't a big deal because remember that the 4 back speakers are just the added sound, u know, that swooshhhhhhhhhh, it's not like they work like the 2 fronts and center speakers when they are just about always working and on where as the back one's just do the occasional noise to help amp up the movie and give that surround feel. Just added affects in the back. It can work in ur apt no problem. Just drop the decibals a bit if u feel it needs to be but it won't be a big deal, u will see.
