Default Just saw Tropic Thunder

I just got back from a special showing of Tropic Thunder and I can't believe I'm saying this but I thought it was damn funny and everyone else in the packed theater seemed to think so too.

Not really a spoiler if you have been reading around but Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey are in it and not just quick cameos. If you wanted to see Tom Cruise outside of his normal acting comfort zone, this is it.

Actors making fun of how insensitive and stupid actors can be, the movie business is, etc etc. RDJ was great, Ben Stiller was better then usual, and I can't normally stand Jack Black but good stuff from him too.

Hope this helps some folks and remember......just "my" opinion.

Even the previews crack me up with the whole surgery in Jack Blacks role (right?). Will probably see at least on BD.

Wayyyyyyyyyy off the norm for Tom Cruise. Tom and Matthew don't play themselves in the movie, they have real roles.

There are some funny cameos with one being Tobey Mcguire and another one that would be a spoiler.

You need to make sure you are there in time for the previews....trust me on this.

Rotten Tomatoes so far is 80% overall with the critics giving it a 93%. If word of mouth gets out I think it will do better then people expect this weekend.

From yesterdays comments from RDJ, it would only be fitting if he takes down the bat

This is good to hear. I was afraid it was going to suck. I usually tend to shy away from watching comedies in theaters because they're always so hit or miss for me. I'm not typically a fan of Ben Stiller and Jack Black's normal stuff, but maybe I'll give it a shot since it's getting such positive buzz!

"Previews" are from other movies the "actors" filming Tropic Thunder (as part of the plot of the movie) are in.
You can get more information by visiting the "actors'" web sites:
http://www.kirklazarus.com/ (played by Robert Downey Jr.)
http://www.jeffportnoy.com/ (played by Jack Black)
http://www.tuggspeedman.com/ (played by Ben Stiller)

Looking forward to this.

I heard the Tom Cruise stuff is worth the price of admission alone and shows a totally different side of him.

Yep, the previews after the previews are from movies the actors did previous to Tropic Thunder. Oh, and the commercials the rap star turned actor did for his merchandise line.

I did forget to mention that if you are too sensitive/easily offened, this isn't for you.

I just started thinking about the character Tom Cruise played and I start
cracking up.

Howard Stern has been talking this up, and he seems "sincere" but he pushes whatever he's paid to push, but him talking about the movie does make it seem funny.....

Thanks for your review/recommendation, because otherwise I'd be inclined to steer WAY CLEAR of this movie due to Jack Black alone. I'll check it out when it hits video.

I thought the "surgery" was RDJ's role....

Thanks for your review. I was on the fence about seeing this in the theatre, but if it's as funny as you say, I may just check it out.

Thanks!

Go see this man. I totally agree with the OP, this is one of the best comedies of the decade. I couldn't stop laughing plus all the cameos are awesome.

Read the review on CNN.com, it's pretty right on. The part of the review about how the protestors should be the Screen Actors Guild and not the special interest groups for the mentally handicapped was accurate.

I also didn't know that the person doing the filming was responsible for "The Thin Red Line".

Wait. What? Terrence Malik is somehow associated with "Tropic Thunder." That confuses me.

The film was photographed by John Toll, who shot "The Thin Red Line," and he gives it a look to compete with the Vietnam movies it has in its sights ("Platoon," especially, gets a ribbing). There's also the now-cliched '60s jukebox soundtrack to go with it.
