Talking Criterion Collection Chooses PS3

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-...eed&subj=Crave

Criterion Collection uses a PS3 and a low priced HDMI cable to boot.

Interesting. I didn't know the PS3 was a Blu-ray player too.

A film company shouldn't have a single player. They should have all the latest ones to test there matrix on them. God know if C use Java, java is complex and should be tested on all hardware...

Besides the fact that the PS3 is one of the better-performing players, it's also by far and away the most popular. Why optimize discs to a player that only a handful of people own? So for me, this makes a lot of sense. Then again, I'd be hard-pressed to disagree with anything Criterion does.

I find that really surprising. If they truely wanted the best picture possible, they really should go with the Denon 3800BDCI player. But I guess they feel that have to use what is the most popular player at the moment.

I doubt it's their only player. It's just a new set up in their screening room. I just found it amusing that they used "just a game machine" and that Monster didn't throw some money at them to endorse their "product".

Indeed. Studios (big and small) are going to be mainly concerned with ensuring proper playback on the PS3... since it makes up over 90% of players out there.

If there's a "bug" that prevents playback in the Denon player, you can make Denon release an update. If there's a "bug" that prevents playback on the PS3, then you better pull the title and fix it!

It's not at all a comment about the quality of any player... just a reality of the market.

The OP meant a matrix of players v. tests.

They don't have to. What they can do is use the services of BD testing facilities, like the one Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory have. PHL tests their discs on all available BD players in the market.

The BD speed benchmark is still with the PS3 for Profile 1.1 & 2.0. They'll probably use it until standalones can match it.
